Word is that Sangalaki has been bought (whole or in part) by some wealthy dude who plans to 'do a Wakatobi' with it. I have heard it will become accessible via seaplane from Balikpapan and will be turned into a much more exclusive resort.
Personally I think this is the only hope for Sangalaki. For years now it has been run into the ground due to what appears to be a lack of money and poor management. Such a shame since the diving in the general area is phenomenal: Mantas, turtles, macro, jellyfish lake etc and the island itself is beautiful.
I really can't wait to see how this develops. Imagine! Access via Singapore-Balikpapan then direct flight to the island - excellent.
It will probably slip beyond the price range of most but there are always Derawan and Nabucco as alternatives.
However with enough money and drive Sangalaki could find itself finally realising it's potential and becoming known the world over as it deserves.
