raybo,
Still looking for some info on San Carlos?
I know it well. It seems like I spend all summer there.
There is not too much in the way of live aboards. We liked the Poseidons Mistress but it went down in a storm over a year ago. I cant recommend the El Duque
we call it El Dugie
slow, cramped quarters, sleeping on deck only, breaks down a lot and
oh, yah
a bit odiferous. But some people seem to like it:

I cant say much about the Bravo
never been on it:

We use the Ocean Spirit and it works great for us...OW certs and such. But I dont believe you will find that they run much during the week
mostly Fri.-Mon. kinda thing. And
you would have to join up with a big group
maybe not the kind of thing you want to do:

I suppose if you were going to make a week of it you would probably want to stay in San Carlos and use the day boat operators.
Either Garys shop:

Or, El mar:

If your up for it you might want to get a Panga
makes for a fast but rough ride.
I like to stay at the Plaza Las Glorias. It's in "town" and within walking distance to all the fun places:

But the Plaza is much nicer... just more out of the way:

The diving is O.K. "Local" diving is by the slower day boats and the sites are so so. Rock only, no coral. Stars, lots of small fish, an occasional octo, lobster, etc. Better diving can be found at San Pedro Nolasco Island...about 45 min. to an hour by some of the faster boats (much less than that by Panga.) Again, all rock and no coral. The main attraction there, of course, is the sea lions...very playful. I've seen hammers at some of the deeper sites but that is pretty unusual. But sometimes a turtle or even a Sea Horse can be had. On the trip out to the island...dolphins a plenty... and sometimes, whales...yep, whales! Shore diving is somewhat limited but can be done from your car, if pressed.
Don't take the above as a negative report. I love San Carlos but it certainly is not comparable to places like Coz.

Oh, BTW, getting there can be quite an adventure. I once posted a thread about it...sort of a strange story...but I got chopped off at the knees... so I deleted it. But here is some info on how to get there and what you will need to cross the border and what you may find along the way (Mex. requirements seem to change daily but the info is about as good as you'll find):
