A question I asked TS&M (Lynn) years ago, when I was new. How many questions are there that can be discussed? Lots are beyond me with my limited DM experience of 4 years and normal benign dives to 30'.
or so. Yes, I have dived to 130 and done a fair bit of deep diving.

I have been a SB member since '07 and continue to log on daily (being retired). I have noticed some that only post in The Pub---Have they concluded that it's all been discussed? And SB is the only forum worthwhile with all it's members. I know---I joined them all.

"Do a search"....

I am so confused, what are you talking about?

Are you talking about how sometimes when people see a question their answer is "go do research and figure it out - it's been asked before"?

I'm just trying to figure out where you are coming from :)

I guess I'm feeling that it's pretty much all been said? I'm not sure myself.

I suppose in one form or another it has all been said before - however even if the concept is the same, the person asking the question would not be. Each person has a different set of circumstances as to why they are asking a question. Some threads that answer these questions are unable to be replied to and the personal part of the question would then go unanswered.

By asking a question over again - the answer could potentially be tailored to suit the posters current circumstances.

That's my view on it :)

That said - I don't mind answering repeat questions. It doesn't bother me at all. It bothers some people though and that's perfectly fine.

The answer may also be informed differently by the experience of the person giving it, and sometimes the perspective of a less-experienced person may be helpful to someone similar.

Occasionally, in a thread on a 'same old, same old' issue, I see a new idea, challenging me to rethink a position.

Richard.

Good points. that's what Lynn said.

I can sympathize with your sentiment, but it has not all been said. Much of it has been said. Most of it has been said. All of the boring mundane subjects have been covered ad nauseam. (why does speel cheek want that to be ad gymnasium?). So I gloss over most threads these days. meh. why bother.

But not everything has been covered, especially technology related items.

Some examples:
Just this week I learned that the first models of UWATEC dive computers featured potted innards instead of oil filled. Who knew? Shoe goo to the rescue!

A few weeks ago we established that many (most, all?) inflators used the same size of rubber washer.

And we still are unsure if stinky wetsuits can simply be tossed into the washing machine with regular detergent.

We have much work left to do...

There is a wealth of info on this board and doing a search turns it up easily. People react better to "while searching the board I came across a post and I have a question" vs I made five dives please give me answers. There are some very esteemed members from the diving industry, academia, and experienced divers on this board and no where else can you access that kind of expertise, wisdom or assistance. It is common sense to not waste people's time. I'm here to learn and also share my experiences and opinions. I want to associate with other diving enthusiasts as we share common bond. I had mentors and I am one now. But I can be grumpy since I'm not 19 anymore! LOL the bottom line is do a little self education and then ask intelligent questions, you will get plenty of help.

As a moderator, I used to get annoyed when a n00b would post the same question that had been answered hundreds of times. For instance - Blue Hole in Belize and What's the Best ... in Cozumel. NetDoc and Quero straightened me out enough that I don't chew them out anymore and tell them to do a search. I still think some of the questions are from laziness but many times it's because the n00b's don't know what they don't know and are confused about everything.

We are trying to make interacting easy here. I came to Scubaboard to learn from the vast experiences and knowledge that many of the members have. I stay because this is place that I feel best suited to continued learning. Some fires do get started but most are put out while they are still smoldering.

A few topics either evolve by their very nature (e.g.: dive computers & other technology), or our understanding grows through active discussion & debate (e.g.: shark feeding dives). Even such seemingly trivial topics as whether a quality split fin can be the best choice for some people may be better represented in some threads than others. Some of the A.I. discussions, including whether Shearwater should/would ever produce an A.I. computer, may evolve over time.

Trip reports probably show the impact of individual experience and perspective best. Someone well-traveled, seasoned and confident relates a trip report differently than someone with a few to several trips, who relates differently than a 1st timer. I've read people tend to be self-referential; we tend to unconsciously assume others think & feel as we do, until given cause to do otherwise.

I've seen a couple of trip reports about mainland Mexican destinations that aren't so touristy. In both cases, I asked about how prevalent English was there, to get a sense of whether being solely an English speaker would be a problem. While both reports were detailed, good reports, apparently the authors didn't see this as a big issue to volunteer at the start. Many would be upset to show up somewhere & discover most people couldn't understand us. At least we'd want to know in advance.

It's also helpful when dealing with some of the more complex destinations with multiple options. For example, where should you stay on Curacao? Which of the multiple popular Roatan options is best? What about Belize - Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Turneffe Atoll, one of the 2 Aggressor live-aboard boats, what about Placencia and Splash Divers... With some of these places, where you stay has a much bigger impact that, oh, say, whether you stay at Buddy Dive Resort or Divi Flamingo on Bonaire.

I keep a sticky note on my computers & related devices with a number of threads I think address interesting subjects well (e.g.: people talking about diving in Dominica or St. Croix, debating shark feeding diving, useful trip reports). There's worth in compiling a personal collection of your favorites to share where relevant.

Richard.

P.S.: Searching the forum isn't always simple. It doesn't default to 'most recent,' and 'most relevant' can turn up threads so old they're not. Someone pointed out you can sometimes better search Scuba Board by using Google to search for a term & include 'ScubaBoard' in it. Don't know if that holds since the latest forum upgrade, but sometimes it takes work.
