I liked 1 better, but 2 has a mood that I also like. A bit more light on the crab on 2 to bring out the colour with the same background as 2 would be an effective picture and possibly even better than 1 which has a lot of background clutter that detracts from the crab. Just my thoughts

OK, I'll be the "strange person" :D

While #1 is very well-lit and shows great colors, it lacks depth. #2 is more dramatic and makes the crab pop out of its den so to speak. If you hadn't shown us #1, we probably wouldn't complain about the lack of colors, either.

I knew there were strange people out there ..... :D

Here is the best I could do in trying to equalize things in black and white:

In color, I like #1 better, I like the colors. I don't dislike number two though, just like thefirst one better. In bw I do not really like number one all that much? But number 2 stands out and has depth to it...insteresting, but then I am wierd...

I guess I'm weird too because I agree. #1 in color and #2 in B&W. #2 in color looks like a shot I try to get where I can't aim my strobe.

Wonder if you could use PS to darken the shadows on number 2 a bit? Make it look like it's coming out of the darkness. I did something similar with this shot and I like it quite a bit...

That is a cool effect...Instead of a shadow that could weaken the shot, now it looks like a curious garibaldi coming out to say "Hi!"
