I know it's a ways off, I am from the Chicago area and will be in Salt Lake City in Oct. 2006. Any recommendations on dive sites. Links, and dive shops would be appreciated.

Check out Homestead just outside of Salt Lake. This is where lots of people do their certifications dives in the area. No need for a wetsuit as its so warm they won't let you wear one. Kind of like diving in a cave that has water like a hot tub.

Its an interesting place to say you have been and to see but can get a bit boring after a dive or two. Cool place though.

Another possibility is: http://www.seabase.net/
They've stocked it with some salt water fish.

Wow, that place looks alright. I must have my head in the sand to have not known about this. Have to look into it for some of the next round of certification dives. Thanks for the Info.

BTW: Are you out of a shop?

I'm heading to Homestead in February for Rescue checkout dives. That wraps up on a Saturday. Sunday is open. I think that I will hit Seabase, too!

Homestead is a great place to practice skills, 96degree water good viz, great resteraunt right outside, just not alot to see in the water, no fish etc you must make a reservation to get in.. Seabase lots of fish, Viz is Bad To POOR on a good day usually around 2-3ft, its like diving in a sewer treatment plant.. I tell people if you can dive a seabase you can dive anywhere because that is the worst viz you will ever have. Blue lake is 110 miles out towards nevada, good viz during the week. weekends get a little busy. water in the upper 70's, lots of bass and bluegill. be prepared for the horseflies they do bite and thru a 7mm wetsuit.. if you have any questions shoot me an e mail alan243@hotmail.com

Let us all know what you think of Seabase and what it is like. Homestead is nice because of the temp but if sure gets boring after awhile and when its churned up it can be bad. It would be nice to find another place that is a little more opened up.

We dive Fish Lake alot durring the summer. It is about 3 hours south of Salt Lake. It is cold water. But a 7mm is good in the summer. Lots of fish and really nice camping and cabins to rent. Way up in the Mountains. Check it out. I agree with Alan243!!

Neptune dive shop in Salt Lake has a lot of activities planned during the year. Blue lakes out by Wendover UT is a good place to dive. Check out Seabase, a lot of people get certified there.
