Hello!

Spearfishing can attract sharks, depends on where you're diving. Also depends on other factors. I can't really advise you on this - don't get many spearfishers in the murky depths of Scotland! ;)

Another concern would be, if the guys you are with are spearfishing, will there be someone with you in a buddy capacity? If you are a new diver, who is not confident, then it might be better to have buddies who aren't focussed on something else.

Safe diving

is itsafe for anew diver to go diving with guys that go spearfishing i heard that the dead fish atracts sharks

Hi,

I would be more concerned about keeping up safely with a group of other divers who will be focusing on other goals and tasks.

Be sure you explicitly discuss the buddy expectations and dive plan and all that, and that your companions are aware of and will respect your experience level.

Cheers,
Walter

If your new to diving, I would suggest that you spend some time with some divers that will help you work on skills. That would include buddy skills. Spear fishing tends to be a solo style of diving that relies on the "same ocean" buddy system. In effect no buddy at all. What you need is not what they can give you right now, and I'm sure they will not mind if you sit out the hunting trips, or tag along with a dedicted buddy and watch the show from a safe distance.

Welcome the the board Oscar.
To me, it depends on what you mean by "going along". If you mean some of the divers on a boat are spear fishing while you and another buddy are looking at the reef, then I would tell you that you may get lucky and actually SEE a shark. It's actually kind of rare to see shark in a lot of places. The increased "danger" is darn near zero. On the other hand, if your "buddy" is doing the spearing then I would say your safety on the dive is considerably less but not from sharks. Your buddy will no doubt be thinking of the hunt and not you. Spear fisherman and photographers (myself included) don't make the best buddies, esp for new divers. So, IMHO if your buddy is carring a spear, you should find another buddy who will just dive with you, if others are doing the spearing, look forward to maybe getting a good look at a shark...fact is, you are too big, smell funny and sound even stranger than anything nature programmed into the sharks menu.

Besides, divers tend to give sharks gas!

Hi Oscar.....

I too would urge you to BYOB (bring your own buddy) on this dive or any other dive for that matter. Sounds like the reasonable, safe and smart thing to do. Also I encourage you to find a buddy who has considerably more diving experience than you have at this point of your young diving career. There is still so much for you to learn and experience. Come to think of it, I fit in that category too. Happy diving to you!

Live Long and Dive!
