So I've done a lot of reading and testing. Today I put it all to use. I am using a S90 with ys-01 strobe and inon close up lens. I am shooting in M with f5.6 1/500 and just playing with the strobe power. Ive been positioning the strobe down and at an angle out from the lens. I noticed that some times the focus box goes yellow (caution) if I put it in macro mode, does that mean it too close? should it not be in macro mode if I have the lens on? should I make the focus box bigger? Any tips? here are my results:

My belief is that if you are shooting with an external diopter then you should not put the camera in macro mode but I am not at all sure on exactly what Canon is doing in macro mode. In general though the magnification you get with a diopter is dependent on the focal length of the main lens, the longer the focal length the more magnification.

Bill is right, you don't need the camera in macro when you use the close-up lens. You might want to give yourself some cushion on depth of field though and shoot at f/8 when using the Inon lens, or for close work in general. Sure, drop to f/5.6 if you have to have the YS-01 cranked up all the way but if you have enough output for the distance you are at and you can shoot f/8...I'm just sayin' . Not a huge gain for depth of field but it helps.

The target light on the -01 can help with focus but the trap is you end up often aiming the strobe for that function and then find the strobe angle is creating backscatter or is aimed too directly at the subject. Adding a separate focus light, if you feel you are having focus problems, can help. // ww

Hi. You dont have to set it on macro when you have the macro lens on. The add-on macro lens has a distance range in which it achieves focus. It is very challenging at first to achieve consistent focus with a macro lens. Especially so I you have twp of them stacked on top of each other.

Practice with it at home so you get a feel for what the range is. This range varies depending on the amount of zoom you are at. I like to zoom in all the way to get the most out of the lens but that really shortens the focus range.

With small subjects and very shallow depth of field, I recommend you set aperture at f8, shutter 1/500 and ISO 80. Then you only have the strobe power to lighten or darken as you see fit as you review the shots taken. This will drastically simplify theblearning.curb as you are adjusting only one setting in relation to darken or lighten.

The strobe should idealy be about 8 to 10 inches from your subject eithr at 12 or 2 o'clock positions.

Practice a lot at home.
