Next year but who cares? S100A. Well, I guess you do.

Probably next year in the next iteration. Apparently some people don't care about video quality, but there are those who do.

I don't understand why Canon didn't put HD video in the S90, aside from leaving a feature to add next year... Most of their current cameras do (P&S as well as dSLR's) at least 720.

So, how long do we have to wait for Canon to come up with a camera that blends the S90 with HD video? I'm willing to wait...

If you wait, it'll be years before they add HD. On the other hand, if you buy an S90 now, they'll add HD in about 10 months ... law of nature. ;)

Done deal then, I took one for the team, HD on the way. N

I too am puzzled why Canon has decided to leave HD video out of their top Point n' shoots. The G9 had a high resolution video mode "though with extremely low fps", so there is no reason why they should have not continued to build upon that feature with true 720p and then eventually to 1080i/p.

My guess is its a marketing strategy to make their "prosumer" video hungry customers spend a bit more on a video capable DSLR. No true shutter bug is going to be happy with the bottom of the barrel features found on Canon's P&S's which have HD video, so they create a void in their product line which effectively boots revenue.

I too am willing to wait and have found that the 640x480 video offered on the S90 and G'series cameras to be sufficient until such time. As always my main focus underwater is still photography but I do like to dabble in video. Here are two examples of what I've been able to do with my G10 : YouTube - Casino Point Spring Diving 4 29 09
YouTube - Santa Cruz Island, Scorpion Anchorage Summer 09
Make sure to watch the HQ version;)

Nice videos! I agree with your assessment of the G11/S90 strategy, and from what I've seen, the video, while not HD, is high bitrate and benefits from the stellar low-light capabilities of the cameras.

The product life of Canon digitals is short, 6-9 months. Then they typically introduce a new model with more "something", depending on where they guess the market is going. Since the S90 has been around since about 9/09, it's probably close to discontinuance in say 6/10 -- maybe a little later since it is so popular, but Canon is paranoid about their competitors catching up with them, hence the frequent new product intros. If they perceive Sony encroaching with something like the WX1 (has similar sensor and lens, HD video but limited manual control), maybe they will have to respond.

If HD video is a feature customers really cry for, they'll do it. But honestly most users seem content with the barely adequate video already onboard, they just post to youtube or facebook.
