just came back from cozumel, and i think i need to consider getting a strobe and macro lens for my canon s70.

did some research, and it seems that the only compatible manufacturer is inon. can anyone correct me if i'm wrong?

the list that i've compiled looks like this
- 28AD Mount Base DC40

- Optical D Cable/Cap W17 set (w23 also seems to work.)
- d-2000 series strobe

- UCL-165AD (Macro)
- AD Mount Converter for UCL-165AD

do i need a trey? which arms are compatible with the setup i'm looking at?

i'm a newbie, so any pointers are really appreciated.

thanks :)

yup, that's roughly what I had before I sold my set. In addition to the 28AD mount base, you do need a tray. You could go with the Inon grip (smaller one) which is a tray/ handle combination and is made for the 28AD mount. The Inon grip plus a single small arm does nicely (that's what I used). A cheaper alternative is to get a simple tray and one of those flex arms. But it is nice having a grip handle for your left hand. Actually, I would probably recommend the ULCS tray and grip. Feels a bit more comfortable in your hand than the Inon.

You also need to get a strobe adapter to connect the strobe to the arm (Inon or ULCS adapters are available for the D-2000)

If you're interested, I think I still have my old Optical D Cable/ Cap W17. It was the one thing I wasn't able to sell when I sold my old kit. (I'll have to check to see if I still have the stickers that cover the S70 internal strobe). Given I have no use for this cable set, I'd sell it for pretty cheap. Only catch is it's out here in HK, but it should be cheap to ship to the East Coast as it's pretty light. PM me if you're interested. Also, I think I still have an extra -0.5 diffuser for the D-2000 as well.

edit: found a pic of my old S70 setup to give you an idea of an Inon grip II setup + single Inon S arm + 28AD mount base + macro lens.

ahh..so this is what i'm aiming for. nice to be able to see what the finished product should look like. thanks.

the strobe adaptor that connects to the arm, is it a clip or is it another wire i gotta hook up somewhere?

the black round thing in the middle of the arm, is it part of the arm? also, is that a focus light in the setup?

pm sent regarding the optical cable.

the strobe adapter screws into the bottom of the strobe and has a ball end on it. The black wire you see running from the strobe is the optical cable. The middle thing is a three way elbow so I could get a focus light on. Actually, I didn't like this setup, as moving the focus light would tend to move the strobe and vice versa... edit: black round thing is a lens caddy where I you can put the screw on macro lens when you are not using it.

I posted that late last night and I didn't get a chance to check to see if I have all the bits and parts to the optical cable set. Will try to confirm that after work today and will PM you.

You might want to consider the Inon 240 strobe, too. If/when you change systems this strobe will let you hard wire a synch cord while right now you can use the fibre optic cable.

thanks for the suggestion. i'll definitely look into it.

is there a list of compatible strobes posted somewhere that tells you which strobes you can use with with housing?
