Thanks to the board's helpful suggestions and posts -- I've focused my search for a digital camera to a Powershot s70 & canon housing (WP-DC40) & the Sea & Sea YS-60 strobe. Took into consideration the amount of time I'll spent using the setup, functions of the camera/strobe and my budget.

Questions that I have been unable to answer or have received conflicting replies on:

1. Which hardware/tray/arm is recommended to connect Sea & Sea YS-60 strobe to canon WP-DC420 housing?

2. TTL/manual cord -- what are my options, how do I connect a cord into the housing system (It is my understanding that the camera is not TTL compatible).

3. any other accesories you would recommend for the setup above.

Thanks!

Ben

How are you planning on firing the strobe? I've got a YS-60, admittedly a few years old, and there doesn't seem to be a way to slave it to a digital compact, unless Sea & Sea have come out with a new connector since I last researched this.

I bought myself the new Sealife stobe, which is triggered via an optical fibre and can be set up to deal with the up to 4 pre-flashes that most compact digitals use. I'll be p'd if I find I could have used my YS-60!!

Are you thinking of the YS-90??

First... Try the s70 without a strobe. It may be to your liking without one.

Question 1, combines with 2.

You need a camera that is optically triggered, and that can ignore a "pre-flash".

You can not hook a cable to the canon housing so if the strobe you mention only has a cable fire option... Keep looking.

Look here for a good strobe that can operate as a slave.

There is no pre-flash with the s70 in manual mode. I guess I'll have to do some more research. I thought I read on this board the YS-60 was compatible.

I'll look into Sea Life -- however I'm looking for a strobe that I can grow with my camera usage over the years.

Any suggestions based on this no pre-flash feature?

Thanks,

Yes... there is no pre-flash in manual mode. However, the automatic modes do work well underwater. I would look at the strobe finder on digital diver.net and I would also try the S70 without a strobe (as my wife has done many times with great success)

We have an Ikelite DS-125 with a manual controller for our strobe, you can set it for pre-flash or no pre-flash. It can grow with your photography (be used with cable, ttl, etc.)
