I have an S100 that I can't seem to deal with high contrast. If there is a bright area, that gets blown right out and everything else looks pretty bad too.
I had a G12 with the same issues and of course the gopro does it as well.
If i take a picture or video of a scene and anyone is wearing bright yellow fins, the fins blow right out to white.
I asked a local camera buff and he said that it was the fault if it being a small chip camera and there was no real way to stop that.
My HV20 and HV30, (long gone :( ) didn't seem to have that problem unless there was an extremely high contrast, i.e. exiting the Devil's Throat, and even then it wasn't nearly as bad.

Any ideas about how to deal with this? I really like the S100, but this is driving me nuts

What mode/settings are you using on the S100??...Also, can you post one(a pic) here that you're talking about??

What I'm thinking is the S100 & the G12 are good little cameras & you should be getting some somewhat quality shots with them..

EDIT:.....duh.....I should have looked @ page 2.......Next question, what strobe are you using??.....
Here's a similar(sorta) shot I took a couple days ago, in CZM too ---with a S95..

Your shot is in manual. If you were taking the same in P mode with no other changes you would have ended up with the same washed up picture of the op

Am still thinking he might have had the internal flash on as well...

In video it is quite likely the camera will go focus hunting so it's best to lock it.

I thought we were talking about photo's, as the example image is a photo..... Dont know anything about video.... My bad :/

..talking about both.. That's why, aside from the cost, I don't use a strobe. I flip back and forth during a dive, and I never use the internal flash underwater. It's nice to see from diver85's pic that the problem can be solved. Was it taken with a strobe?

I may have found the answer..of course it was on the last day of the Aquacat trip, so no diving to check it out. If you're shooting jpgs you can set the DRC to -200% or -400% which tones down the highlights. This works on land shots, so we'll see. There are also settings for brightening shadows if that's a problem as well.
Many thanks fro all the suggestions. I did manage to get a few good pics and videos:
