I'm thinking about replacing my current Tetra 5050 system with a Sea&Sea DX-2G. I would like to continue using my existing S&S YS-90DX strobe(s).

I have read in various places that the YS-90DX strobes may not do so well when used with the optical sync TTL mode required by the DX-2G. And maybe it depends on how old the strobes are (serial # wise).

Does anyone have any first-hand information to confirm/deny whether the YS-90DX works effectively in optical sync TTL mode? Do the serial numbers of the strobes matter in this regard?

Thanks for any information/comments.

I would go directly to sea n sea as you are buying their camera and using their flash.

Think there would be great chance that this would work.

I asked this question in the Sea&Sea forum and got the response that I was not hoping for.

Hi onewolf-
The YS-90DX strobes are digitally compatible with use of a fiber optic cable, however, to get TTL you would need to upgrade to the YS-110 Alpha with the DS-TTL feature. The YS-90's would only TTL with a SLR housing and YS converter and sync cord. The DS-TTL feature was not developed until after the YS-90 series.

Not to worry OneWolf, manual isnt the end of the earth and many photographers here including me use manual only. The plot (thanks to Phil Rudin) is to set the camera up so that the f-stop is the default change in manual and the shutter speed is pre-set to whatever your camera needs then all you do is change the f-stop and press the button. It will only take you a few dives before you have this method under control and the histogram helps a lot.

TTL is not all it's cracked up to be but it is handy to ensure you get the shot, however it comes out.
