Sailor evacuated from navy ship after diving mishap
A sailor from the Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Parramatta is in intensive care after a diving accident off the New South Wales south coast yesterday, the Department of Defence has said.

The sailor got into difficulties during a diving operation to clear snagged fishing floats from underwater fittings.

Medical staff on board the ship decided to evacuate the sailor offshore, the Department said.

"A Navy doctor joined the ship by a naval helicopter. A civil ambulance helicopter also attended the ship and transferred medical staff and additional equipment," a spokesman said.

"On the advice of medical staff on Parramatta, the sailor was evacuated to Prince of Wales hospital by the civil ambulance helicopter in a critical but stable condition."

The sailor's identity has not been released.
