Hello All,

I just booked our flights for the end of April to Roatan! We were looking into staying at the Coconut Tree Cabins in Half Moon Bay and diving with their dive shop. 2 things - 1) their cabins in Half Moon are all full but they do have availability in West Bay. Can anyone comment on pros and cons of the different locations? From what I can tell West Bay may be a little more quiet, better beach, and potentially better snorkeling from the shore but Half Moon is obviously closer to the town of West End, which we will want to be frequenting in the evenings. Any comments would be appreciated. If anyone could suggest other good accommodations closer to West End that would also be appreciated. We have four people looking for either a two bedroom or two single units but do want a kitchen in a moderate price range. 2) I am planning on diving with Coconut Tree Divers - can people comment on if they are recommended or should I look elsewhere? Thanks all!

Mike

The kitchen will be the difficult part. Most of the places I know of only have the basics - microwave, small refrigerator etc. Too bad about CT cabins not being available, some friends stayed in the 2BR cabin, it has a full kitchen.

Two other places I've seen mentioned - Sunset Villas are newish 1-2 BR condos in the West End. They rent through Roatan Property Mgmt or vrbo.com. They go for around $1000/wk. I've never been there - and can't exactly place where it is in relation to the West End "strip" or CTD. There may also be on-going construction - read the TripAdvisor reviews. A couple of them:

West End Vacation Rental - VRBO 308136 - 2 BR Roatan Condo in Honduras, Ocean View - Poolside
West End Vacation Rental - VRBO 320628 - 2 BR Roatan Condo in Honduras, Sunset Villas, 2 King Suites, Poolside-Ocean Views

You may just want to rent a house in the West End instead. There's several on the east side of Half Moon Bay - a couple are right on the water. Many in the $1000-1500 range/wk when I was looking. I found them on vrbo.com

fwiw, I rented Sea Lodge from Roatan Property Mgmt. It's a nice house, reasonable, but the "kitchen" was a sink, dorm frig, microwave and coffemaker. Nice decks, great ocean views and close enough to Coconut Tree that we walked our gear there the first morning - they cleaned/stored it for us all week. The surf breaks on the ironshore directly out front - it's pretty soothing...

The 2nd option might be Luna Beach Resort. They have some 3BR houses on their property that they rent. Cost you $250/day for 4 people. They're fully furnished. They also have an on-site dive operation. Due to their location, it's a partial AI also. Tropical Houses | Luna Beach Dive Resort

Luna Beach is on the far east of what I'd call the "heart" of the West End (east of CTD) - there's a water taxi that takes you to Half Moon Bay - long walk to the West End from LBR. We had planned to stay there originally but the house(s) we needed were booked.

afaik the only two food stores in the West End area are at Coconut Tree and Woody's about a block farther east. Woodys is 2X the size of a 7-11 with some meat/produce/staples etc. The CTD store is mostly drinks/snacks with maybe 2 small aisles of staples. The biggest food store I found was in Coxen Hole on the south side, it was about the size of a small local chain foodstore here. Probably 15-20mins. drive from the West End. Something to plan for if you're expecting to do a lot of cooking.

Nightlife in the West End starts about a block east of the main road into town - Sundowners Bar/Grill - and goes west from there about 1/2 mile or more. So you don't want to be too far east. IIRC it's about 2 miles from the West End to West Bay. Cabs are plentiful if needed - the taxi stand is in front of CTD. Except for really early in the AM, there were always cabs waiting.

CTD will pick you up daily from their location in West Bay. We dove with them, great people, good boats, they dove most of the better sites for us. Texas and Spooky Channel are two you want to do in that area.

We stayed in a place last year called "The Wood House". It's on Half Moon Bay, about a half block from the water and just a few minutes from Coconut Tree and several other dive shops. The house is off the main road so the traffic is minimal, but there are a few local dog around that can be an audible nuisance at night. However the price is very good and it's so convinient. You can google the wood house to take a look.

Last May we stayed at Casa Calico, a Bed and Breakfast in the West End while diving with Coconut Tree. I believe they have the room type you are looking for, easily within walking distance to the dive shop.

I have been diving with Coconut Tree for over 10 years on my vacations. IMHO this is no better operation in west end.
