Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some advice about diving/touring the Roatan.

I am 26 years old, beginner/new diver and I will be travelling alone. I hope to go to Honduras in the beginning of April for about a week. I don't have to go to a huge all inclusive resort, but since I am travelling alone, it would be nice to meet up with some people. I am looking at getting a dice package. So far I have my eye on Anthony's Key Resort but there are sooo many to look at!

Questions:

-what part of the island do you recommend?
-any particular places to stay or avoid?
-do resorts typically only dive on "their side" of the island?
-what is the town like? is it safe to leave the hotel/resort alone? are there lots of restaurants, etc., off the resorts/hotels? If I don't get my meals included, what is the average price of the local restaurants?

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Get a place in West End Village. Book your dives with West End Divers or Coconut Tree Divers. It is safe to go out of your room and enjoy yourself but certainly at the end of an evening, you'll want to be in a condition to remain aware of your surroundings.

AKR is the huge all-inclusive resort...lol One thing to be aware of is I believe there's a single supplement.

What Chilly said...here's some general info about the West End you may find useful. Roatán, West End | Scuba Diving | Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras | PADI

Typically the resorts only dive their side. There are exceptions - the Dolphins are at AKR, the Shark Dive is at Waihuka off the airport. Just about every operator books either - sharks only thru an operator. We did both, our dive op (Coconut Tree) set it up for us. Quite a few shops also run around and dive Mary's Place but its' advanced. Some of the far West Bay dives are considered advanced also - they're drift dives. I didn't find any of them overly difficult though. And among the best dives - Texas is a good site.

Dives pretty much everywhere ar 10/$300 - they're often single tank boat dives and they usually return to shore between dives. Most operators do 3/day - a few 4/day. Night dives are $40 and some operator is diving just about every night except Friday/Saturday since that's the travel days on Roatan. All the AI's typically run Sat->Sat.

The majority of the restaurants in all price ranges are in the West End. Almost all the nightlife as well. There's everything there from hostels to pretty upscale accommodations - for Roatan. Most meals were under $20. Most lunches under $5. There's a couple small local markets in town and the local produce/vegetable trucks. Some days fresh fish also.

Some of the resorts are fronted by bars, dive shops, tourist shops or restaurants. Then there's others a little removed from the main street or out on the east point of Half Moon Bay. Those involve a short walk on a dark road at night. I probably wouldn't recommend that for a single female.

Sundowners Beach Bar is a good place to meet other divers. They're on Facebook. There's other bars along the West End as well - most waterview/waterfront. And in West Bay which is two miles farther west. It's not as active at night and the road between the two isn't safe to walk at night - fine during the day though. West Bay has the nicer beach - nicest public beach on Roatan. The cruise excursions know this also.

There's also a water taxi between the two locations till about 8PM. And cabs are pretty much always available - no one drives in the West End due to possible liability issues. The airport ride is $25 everything else is negotiable. As an example, Coxen Hole cost me $15 - French Harbor about $20 and AKR about 6. Cabs wait where the road enters the West End. You don't really want to go to Coxen Hole for much except maybe food shopping. And not at night. There's really nothing there once the cruise ships leave anyway. The bigger food stores are in French Harbor. Some very similar to what you find in the States. If you did want to ride over there to food shop - your cab will wait if asked.

If you are concerned about safety - all the AI resorts (Cocoview, Fantasy Island, Reef House or AKR have on-site gated security. They're all isolated by geography from everything else though. So to go out at night - besides sitting around the resort bar - would require a cab ride. From the south side AI resorts to the West End can be $40 or so - it's not often done.

There are two women in my group and they shared a cabin at Coconut Tree Cabins - neither mentioned feeling unsafe. Another decent option in town is Posada Arco Iris but since it's fronted by Argentinian Grille - a little louder till around 11PM - the Apt. decks look thru/over the restaurant.
Makes it a little safer also. If you contact a resort/hotel ask them what fronts it, there's a couple louder bars sort of nearer the west side of the West End - so it can be a little louder there at night. Sueno Del Mar might be another option also, it's sort of it's own compound, dive shop on-site and they have a small beach/bar waterfront. One of the few places in the West End that is - many of the others are across the main street from the water.

IDK how true it is but someone who lives/works there said Mame Tree is the only place that regularly gets burglarized. That was a few years ago also though.

I stay at Seabreeze Inn. No water view but it's central to West End Village. Rooms are a very good price and for a single gal just about perfect. Small kitchenette, small tv with satellite, a double bed and a single bed in the studio rooms. Dont get one of the smaller rooms but fr a few dollars more you could get a one bedroom with an adjoining living area and i believe it comes with a full kitchen. Good security at night. Great location if you are diving with West End Divers. If you chose Coconut Tree, it will probably be more convenient to stay closer to that op.

I wish I'd started to go to Roatan when I was your age, but then, I might never have come home again. :)

Thank you so much! I actually just emailed them to figure out when the best time to go is! And some of my father's colleagues recommended Coconut Tree, too :)

Thanks so much Steve, this is all great advice. I think I will check out Coconut Tree :)

IMO-----north side or West End(diving is 'better' there than the south).....

Resorts usually go where the weather(wind) is best(for diving)...

&------10 years ago I could have answered your latter Q better, but we sold after 14 years in '08 & haven't been back since about '06.:)..

ALSO, unless things have changed---bring ALOTTA bug juice.....but saying this last part, we really enjoyed the island for about 12 years---just time to 'move on'.....It truly was our 'home away from home' for right @ 12 years--lottsa great memories & friends we made from '94 thru '04...

As diver 85 indicated, bring the bug spray. That's about the only drawback to Roatan and Utila. My recommendation is "BuggSpray" that you can buy online (buggspray.com). You may be able to buy it locally in the US, check for retailers. Don't rely on Cactus Juice sold on the island. An alternate is a vitamin B shot that we got on Utila last trip. The local doc came to the resort and did the shot for $30. Best $30 I ever spent.

Also as mentioned, some of the resorts are a bit isolated so offer some security for the single lady. I would recommend against walking around town or hitting any bars at night and along. Use your common sense. Don't flash jewelry and money.

Other resorts…Reef House, Las Rocas. I had some friends stay at the Mayan Princess a short time ago and had a blast.
