Road trip Cancun to Ambergris Caye

Planning a trip - fly into Cancun get a car - drive down the coast stopping for sightseeing and diving - Tulum, Majahual, Xcalak... want to go to Ambergris Caye to dive for a few days next. How can we get there from across the peninsula? Ferry? Boat? Can we get car there? Only advice I have had is drive to Chetumal and take ferry but this seems out of the way if we are going all the way down to Xcalak. We have never taken this trip - so any advice would be appreciated.

You won't be able to take the car to Ambergris Caye-no cars allowed other than a few taxis. Everyone gets around on golf carts or bikes. I'd park at the Belize City airport and catch the short (20 minute or so) flight over.

You can pay a boat in Xcalack to take you to San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) I haven't done it but was planning on it last summer. Not sure on the price. Seemed reasonable, trip was fairly long. Do a google search on "Xcalack to San Pedro" you will find some info. Or contact XTC dive center in Xcalack they will know for sure. They may even be the ones with the boat that goes there.

You probably won't be able to take a Mexican rental car across the border so I'd go the Chetumal idea ask around Cancun for names of those who will take you by boat.

there is a ferry from chetumal to ambergris caye maybe your best bet ....
