I never had the pleasure of meeting him but several ex-Sealab divers I worked with in the Navy described him as having about half the collective IQ of MIT. The look on their faces and tone of voice said “no joke”. Reading about him made it pretty clear he could see connections and out-of-the-box solutions long before everyone else. I hope his last years were as good for him as he was for his country.
