I had retinal detachment operation three years ago. Is it ok for me to take up diving? Would the pressure underwater somehow affect my retinal and cause another detachment?

And a lot of other fine Ti toys in my eye. I've been diving for a while now with no issues

My buckle is good old solid titanium. Nothing to collapse.

I had forgotten about the bubbles that they inserted.

Thanks for your replies. :)
I think i do have a buckle. Have to check with my surgeon. I did ask her a year and half ago, if i could go diving, she just said no it's not advisible. Since I was not so keen on diving at that time, i didn't bother to probe her for further explanation as she is really the most unfriendly and stern doctor i hav ever encountered. Which is why i am considering a second opinion.

Nicole,
Ask for your records of what implant she used. Then get a second opinion if she doesn't explain things well.

She works for you, not the other way around!

Get the data and ask around. I have a buckle and have been diving with no problems.

A second opinion is definitely called for.

Good luck!

got my second opinion. i mentioned to the doctor for open water, max depth is 18m. she said it should not be a problem! however advance may not be advisable. she also said they type of operation does not matter.

didn't go back to my surgeon to get info.....to see her, i hav to wait for 3-4 hours just to see her for 3-4 minutes....because it's a semi-gov hospital, fees much cheaper, queues much longer. i am not sure how things work in your country, but in my country, it's considered normal at a semi govt or govt hospitals. i hav a friend who lost her appointment card, and the receptionist refused to register her. it's not like my friend didn't pay her last bill!! another reason why i don't wish to go back to that hospital.

my second opinion was at a private hospital...double the charges but worth it.

thanks again guys!!:)

Nicole,
I practice this in the US. The type of surgery will matter. Laser or cryo present no problem once they heal. Solid implants no problem. Hollow or sponge implants trouble.

Here in the ex-colonies, I get a referral to a specialist then I pay $30.00 for the visit. Regular office visits are $15. I can go to anyone I want with out a referral, but then insurance only pays 80%. I volunteer at a charity clinic for patients with out insurance or alot of money. They pay $15 to $30 per visit including meds.
