What can I expect in the Rescue diver class? The guy at the shop just said it was an interesting class. He kind of rolled his eyes.

Most people think that Rescue's a GREAT class. It makes you much more confident in the water.

The class essesntially has two components.
- Recognizing stress, both physical and emotional, in the context of diving. How to deal with it.
- In water rescue scenarios. Physically demanding.

PADI just redid the format for the Rescue class and it's alot more comprehensive. Besides the basic rescue skills, CPR, etc it focuses on helping to make you a more responsible diver. It is also a physical class, so be sure to eat your Wheaties. Try to mix up the scenarious as much as you can (dealing with a panicked diver, etc) so you get a feel for the unpredictability of a rescue situation. Good luck!

The class is also great fun. Personally, I didn't find it that demanding, but then I'm used to certifying lifeguards, too. However, before you think I'm bragging about being fit or something, let me confess that I'm just an average, pudgy, on-the-wrong-side-of-fifty (there's a WRONG side?) guy who spends way too much time indoors. Still, I don't remember the physical side of it at all. What I DO remember--hopefully--are the scuba specific skills we rehearsed and practiced. The techniques do, indeed, have the potential of making one a better diver.
Take the class and have a ball!

Oh I remember the physical part ... dragging/carrying unresponsive diver through/out of surf, timing a break in rescue breathing, hurrying like hell pulling them far enough up beach out of waves so I can continue and perform CPR ... yeah, I remember ;)

Edit: everyone said it would be the best class I ever took and they were right

The class is physically demanding, but don't let that deter you. It is still very rewarding. I was the only female in the class & though I'm not in bad shape, I'm not in the greatest shape either. Physically you can do only what you can do. Everyone has limits & the key is to not surpass those limits & make yourself another victim. Sometimes you have to be creative to deal with any physical short comings.

You're going to get into alot of things you won't expect haha. ;)

Depending on the instructors, they will push you very very hard. It's really better that you don't know what the instructors will throw at you. It's more fun for them, more fun for the other people who have already taken the class and get to participate in your class without you knowing until it's too late. =)
