:doctor: New to the scuba board and trying to get information about technical diving. Does anyone have a good reading list?

Nitroxer

First the classic "DIR: The fundementals of Doing It Right" By Jarod Jablonski

"Technical Diving Handbook" by Gary Gentile

"Caverns measureless to Man" by Shel Exley

A decent Gas book like "The handbook of Mixed Gas Diving" by Lettnin

And to learn how NOT to do it "The Last Dive" by Bernie Chowdhury and "Deep Decent" by Kevin McMurray.

By the way, when talking to your ex about getting your son trained for Scuba - it is not a good idea to be reading "the Last Dive" and when she asks what it is about answer <honestly> "it is about a father and son diving team that die together while wreck diving....." OOOPPPSSSS:wacko:

Happy ending though - he did get properly trained...

Thank you.

I have read "The Last Dive" and given it to my daughter for Christmas. I'll get the others and read them.

You are right about people's reactions when they see you reading "The Last Dive." I did that on a live aboard on the Red Sea.

I'd strongly suggest the O2 Hackers Companion. It will cut through a lot of underbrush in the explanation of handling and using gases for diving.

Thank you Dave D. You and Ontario Diver are great! I'm getting going to get all books recommended.

I have heard about on line training as well. Do you know URLs for that?

"It's Cold, It's Murky. Lots of Wrecks, 18 Species of fish (all various shades of brown and green) but the best beer in the world"

Sounds heavenly to me!

Where do you think the best Great Lakes diving is?

Reading lists are one thing, but "on line training"?

Makes me think

A) this is a troll, in which case you jumped the gun;

B) you are very very new to diving in which case you should read lots to gain a knowledge base and dive lots to gain an experience base, before you pursue the more advanced types of diving.

Of course that is only "my-never-to-be-humble-opinion" :D

Your milage may vary.

(GeeWhiz, just barley noon and I've been had already :D)

Everyone should be contiually learning...but, Troll? I'm not. They live under bridges and eat children, or scare them. No, no, no! Don't be unkind (Buckaroo).

I may be just an Advanced Open Water Diver/Nitrox Certified...and I probably wouldn't match your muscle, or wit, but doesn't each one teach one?

I'm just getting my stuff together, looking for doubles, and tech equipment, so's I can take a Trimix course, so's I can go deeper wreck dive and be safe.

It doesn't hurt to ask people stuff. That's how a person learns. Sorry if you feel I have wasted your time. I really appreciated your feed back and I will still take all good advice.

No harm no foul, Doc.

Don't know your speicalty but can you imagine someone asking where you could get online training as a brain surgeon? :D

Proctologist, maybe!

That being said, I'm not against someone, through a suitable preceptorship and self study, training themselves to do more advanced levels of diving. I taught myself (and my son) deco and trimix diving that way and latter obtained a trimix c-card in the event I needed it to get on a boat or buy gas (always done home mixing to date - also self taught).

That being said my suggestion remains the same, read and study a lot (shouldn't be a problem if you have gone through medical school) and dive a lot (might be a problem if you are currently an intern :D ) Before you add additonal taskloading you want to be very comfortable in the water at each level before you move on to the next.

Enjoy the journey, it is not a race.

PS - I don't feel you've wasted my time:)
