Hello everyone

At the moment I am thinking about replace my mares abyss regulator since it does not have a airflow control and depending on how you hold it it just starts blowing off.

What would you recommend? Experience with other regulators and manufacturers?

Thanks anyway for your help!

Thomas

Have you had the intermediate pressure tested? If the pressure is increasing, then it will cause the second stage to free flow in order to release the excessive pressure. All downstream second stages will do this. The IP should be around 9.5-10.2bar.

It makes no sense if that's the ONLY reason. Just take your reg in for a tune-up/service and it'll be fine, but make sure your tech understand the problem, or find another tech.

If you're looking for opinions on other regs, I love Scubapro and dive the MK20/G250 exclusively; but they're not very popular in Switzerland because they're not as good in cold waters as the diaphragm types such as Apeks.

I agree with the others. Either the intermediate pressure is set too high or an adjustment may need to be made on the second stage. Things a servicing will take care of.

Sounds like a real problem. I'll give you $20 for it. :eyebrow:

I'd have the pressures checked first, but my offer still stands.

hello everyone!
thanks for the advise. think i'll get it checked first before thinking of an other reg ;-) let's see if he can "fix" it... if not i can still worry about having to buy a new one.

thanks!

Very late reply, but anyway...

You've gotten great advice already, but I wanted to mention this just in case:

Depending on how well-tuned your Mares Abyss is, it could be that nothing needs to be changed. Was the regulator freeflowing while in your mouth during the dive, or only if you removed from your mouth quickly, or on the surface if you dropped it in the water, especially with the mouthpiece facing up?

For sure get it checked, and adjusted if needed; but understand that well-tuned regs without external adjusters will tend to be a little bit sensitive until they are either in your mouth, or completely flooded. The same thing applies to regs with external adjusters that are set to their easiest breathing setting... you can think of your Mares Abyss as always set to breath easily, thus it requires a little care in handling it

Surface freeflows do occur with my Mares Abyss (and Voltrex) regulators if I am careless with how I handle them, but they NEVER freeflow when in my mouth, and any surface freeflow is easily stopped by turning the regulator so the mouthpiece faces DOWN, then slowly turning it upright to allow water to fill it... my Abyss (and Voltrex) have been great, bullet-proof, simple-yet-great-breathing regs.

No need to change unless you really just prefer something different. It is a great reg.

Best wishes.

I was hoping for a spare to replace my Scuba Pro octo. But it didn't work.:rofl3:
