I am not sure if this is the right forum, but I thought I would give it a try.

We are considering adding rental cameras to our rental inventory. We have not done this in the past, but we have had many requests for rental cameras.

Does anyone have a rental agreement for cameras that they are willing to share? I want to protect our shop from the negligent use of the camera, but I can't seem to find any such agreement online that is specific to UW cameras.

Thanks!

We don't do it. With cameras starting retail at $399, we tell them to purchase.

I would definitely make it mandatory that they buy DAN equipment insurance for the trip. If you don't chances of your camera coming back working are slim. A little flood and buh bye. I would also do a tutorial of how to use the camera properly. It may take a couple minutes, but be worth the trouble.

What we found, was by the time we figured out insurance and a week rental, they are almost to the price of a new camera, but no where closer to owning one.

Please report back on what you find...I would be interested if there is a better rental model or idea that I missed

Thanks for the response. I will check out the DAN rental insurance today. We difinitely intend on a quick tutorial and we will also make sure that our DM guides are watching the cameras during the dives. Most divers here are only looking to rent for 1 or 2 dives, not for the entire week. The only alternative in town is to buy the disposable cameras where they have to payy approx. $16 for the camera and then have to develop their film back in the states.

We recently found a great price for the SeaLife DC1000s, so we are considering introducing them for rental.

For you, it might not be bad. Even if you don't make them pay for the Insurance for the trip, but figure the yearly cost into the rental fee (divided out over X rentals). It makes it alot easier for you to keep tabs on with your DMs in the water with them, and the shorter rental time frame. I think you are on to something that will work great for you guys.

You should also look into your DMs taking pics and videos and putting something like this together. Its simple to do and takes about 5 minutes to make this video, and you could probably give it away or sell a DVD for a few dollars as well

We do have a very talented UW photographer who goes out on our trips and takes pictures and then sells a CD with a minimum of 25 good UW shots. She charges $12 for the CD and she keeps all the proceeds. We offer it more as a service to help sell trips and in return she gets to dive for free.

I used to do the UW video for the liveaboard I used to work on, but I have not added video as an option for our shop. I used to have to use hi-eight tapes and an editing board to produce the videos and it was very labor intensive, but with the new digital formats I know it is much easier. Maybe down the road...
