I don't want to spend the money for a new spg, so can I remove the one from my console? would that work as well as a dive rite, halcyon, oms etc.... Or would I be better off getting a new one? Its a sherwood. Is there a max depth on these?

I did that on an old console that I had. It was easy to do. You have to pull the spg out of the rubber console, take a pair of wrenches and remove it from the HP hose.

Not sure about the Sherwood, but it is likely that it you won't exceed the depth rating.

One thing to consider - when you pull the spg out of the console, make sure that it is brass or stainless for the housing. If it is plastic it may not put up with the same amount of abuse as a metal housed one will.

You may not have to remove the HP hose. Depending on the console, you may be able to pull the hose (connected to the SPG) up through the hose hole in the console. Like I said, it will depend on the console.

If it's a Sherwood, it will most likely have a plastic housing so it belongs in a protective console. Since it's designed for 4000 psi service, you will have to dive a bit beyond most divers' capabilities to damage it.
If you want a stand-alone spg, spend the bucks for a "dive rite, halcyon, oms etc" model with the brass housing and eBay the Sherwood.

Or keep the plastic one for your backup kit. I use metal cased SPGs (most are older scubapro models) but continuie to use one plastic cased SPG on one reg that is not exposed to as much potential pounding as most. I did add some inner tube sleeves to cushion some of the inevitable bumps when I couldn't find the liquid rubber coating I wanted to use.

Older metal SPGs are fairly common on ebay. Most are attached to older regs which also make good backups. For $50 + shipping you should be able to pick up a perfectly adequate 1st, 2nd, and SPG (console). Better plan on servicing before use as many have spent a lot of time without use before they hit ebay.

You can also just get a rubber boot for the SPG.

I'd recommend a boot or protection. I did this and I started to get bubble leaks around the hose connection point that had previously been protected by the console housing.

cool thanks for the tips. Do you know where i can get just a boot?
