I bought a new first stage to replace my Aqualung Calypso VI. The problem is I can't unscrew the 2 hoses that are left - the 2nd stage and gauge.

Is there any special technique? Do I need to take it to a shop? Are power tools necessary? I don't want to break anything.

No special tools or technique. Use a good, open end wrench to avoid marring the fittings. They should unscrew fairly easily as tightening torque should be about 6 or 7 ft-lb.

okay thanks :P I'll try again

update: got the gauge off! haha

Sounds like the clown who installed them really cranked down on them. Don't do that, hand tight plus a little is all that is needed. The Oring does the sealing, not the torque on the hoses. If you have to crank down on them, you have a bad oring or some other mating surface, fix that instead of adding torque.

Ugh... I half dismantled my old 1st stage trying to get the 2nd off of it. I'm starting to wonder if its permanently stuck on there

edit: I ended up just unscrewing the reg off of the hose at the very end. Much easier and ill feel better with a new hose anyway.

I don't recognize what you have there. That is not a standard hose and I don't see anyplace I would expect it to disassemble any further. It looks like you should be buying some new hoses to set up your 2nd and SPG on your new 1st stage.

That is just a standard 3/8” hose that is frozen in place at the end of the end cap of the Calypso IV. You obviously removed the snap ring (item#26) and the swivel (item#25) over the end of the hose.

That hose is shot since you totally rounded the hex end of the hose. You may be able to disassemble them if you want to salvage the first stage, but you may need some heat and some patience… perhaps some penetrating oils will also help.

What you are seeing is item 22 at the end of the LP hose. See diagrams below.

To apply any torque to item 22 you can use a hard rod through the holes that are showing. I used the shaft of a Phillips screwdriver that fits the hole perfectly to avoid any point loads.

Below are the diagrams of the Calypso IV.

Yeah, the sad part is the hose was rounded like that from the beginning! I do want to salvage it or at least trade it for something. Maybe i'll take it to the LDS to try and trade it for an LP hose :P

thanks for the replys!

Hoses don't last forever - trash it, get a new one for your new first stage.

A Calypso IV has no trade in value and very little (to none) collectors value. The first stage seat is not available, but it can be resurfaced.

The calypso IV is from the mid to late 1970's.

There are very few collectors of single hose vintage regulators... I already have one of every single hose regulator that I personally sold or serviced in the 1970's, including a Calypso III, a Calypso IV, and a Calypso J. I also have every US Divers (now Aqua Lung), Scubapro, and Poseidon regulator built in the 70's, but most vintage equipment divers and collectors tend to value the vintage double hose regulators more than any single hose regulator.

Good luck
