So i'm making this easy for me to understand... regulators that are not nitrox ready can be taken to your local lds so that you can use it for nitrox? regulators that are used for nitrox just have to be serviced/cleaned after each use will just be okay?

Not sure about a regulator that is not Nitrox ready. But a regulator that is nitrox ready doesn't need to be serviced after each use. Just needs to be thrown in a bucket/sink/tub of water for a few mins, hung dry, and is ready for the next dive. It just needs servicing every year just like all regs do.

Most regulators come ready out of the box for use with Nitrox up to 40%. There is no maintenance for them out of the normal good care for a regulator.

If you are using mixes above 40% then they would need to be O2 cleaned.

I don't know of too many regulators now days that don't come ready for up to 40% right out of the box.

What kjvander said.
I don't know of any reg that doesn't come from the factory nitrox ready.
Regs aren't like tanks.
Tanks, during filling (nitrox.....non banked) HAVE to be O2 cleaned, viton "O" rings and special lube (Christolube, Tribolube, etc.) because they'll be exposed to 100% oxygen at some point.
Your regs, (90% of us) will never be exposed to greater than 40% Oxygen.

So, for what it's worth, regs only need to be serviced as part of the routine maintainence.
It has nothing to do with nitrox rules.

okay, coz when i was having a conversation with this guy from my lds, he was saying that not all aqualung regs are nitrox ready, even if it says it's 40% ready out of the box. he also said that he only trusts apeks and poseidon to be the only regs that can be used with air and nitrox. the other brands needs to be adjusted or replaced, i guess it kinda sounded bulls**t 'coz he was selling me what he had at the store, but benefit of the doubt, i want to know if there's any truth in this. i'm not knowledgeable with nitrox yet but my instructor will be introducing us to it soon, i'm just worried coz i know my aqualung calypso is nitrox ready but i was kinda affected with what that guy said to me.

ALL Aqualung regs are nitrox ready. He is feeding you a line of BS. He wants to sell what he has in his store. I am willing to bet 98% of ALL regs on the market now a days ARE nitrox ready up to 40% with no adjustments needed. I wouldn't worry about what he said. Either he doesn't know what he s talking about, or (more than likely) just trying to sell you his crap he has in his store. Check out the very bottom of this page for proof, and yes your calypso is included in that chart.

Aqua Lung Regulator Range

And according to his "theory" I shouldn't be diving nitrox on my Oceanic Delta 4 then. LMAO

Some manufacturers make two versions of the same reg, with only one of them nitrox-compatible out of the box.

Be careful with titanium regs - only those with the inner titanium parts suitably coated are safe with nitrox. Titanium has a very low flash point.

The amount of BS being used by shop owners, employees, and even companies themselves is just staggering anymore. They must not realize that there is such a thing as the internet. THat new divers can now go on line and find out where they are getting screwed and how bad. Regs used for up to 40% should be initially cleaned and checked JUST AS ANY REG SHOULD. New out of the box I check IP's, cracking pressures, connections, etc. Once that is done it is most times all that needs to be done until the next annual service. The guy at the shop is full of crap and most likely going to shaft you other places as well. Think and research carefully before giving him another dime.

thanks guys :) i was just about to bring him my reg for it's first maintenance, now i'm scared that he might do something to it :) anyway, i've been reading here everyday at sb and eventhough there are things that i don't understand yet, i try to learn something a bit everyday and when we were talking, i just had this feeling of uncertainty coz as he was explaining stuff i just had flashes of thread and replies i've read here and things just didn't quite sync most of the time.

thanks for replying guys.

The guy at your LDS only wants your money, and can't be trusted. Any reg is ready to be used with recreational Nitrox. You can take a 30 year old reg, hook it up onto Nitrox 40 and dvie. No modification, adjustments or orings.

I would also suggest talking to your instructor before buying any scuba equipment.
