Im in the market to buy a new reg for my son. At the moment I am on a very limited budget as I have my daughter in a private university. Funds are tight. Im looking for a good budget regulator. I was told the Genesis is a great reg. and I also found to my liking the XS Scuba. Genesis is $189.00 and XS is $240.00. I live in Orange County,Ca. Can anyone give advise or either? Or I am still open to other regs? Thanks

I would check around and see where and if you can get either reg serviced in your area. That would be a major concern with me. I don't want to have to mail it off once a year to get it rebuilt.

Thanks, My LDS's carry both.

I've never had second thoughts about spending more on my reg. I'm not familiar with XS Regs or Genesis but I would make sure the one you go with is balanced. An unbalanced reg will not perform well in deeper water or at lower tank pressures. It is well worth the extra money to go with a balance reg. Good luck on whichever you choose.

I have a GS2000, but just upgraded it to the new Mares Abyss. I used the GS2000 on about 15 dives, mostly in colder (72-50 degree) quarry water and never had any issues. I will say though, that it seems to breathe a little different as the tank pressure gets lower, hence the switch to a pricier reg. I still use the GS2000 as my Octo. Bottom line: Not a bad regulator for the money. Of course, your mileage may vary.

I have a SeaAir, and it breathes great. The only minor complaint I have about it is that the flow-adjust knob can get sticky.

I have a GS2000. It is an OK reg. I have found that it breathes rather hard when I roll over on my back. Also, at deeper depths (around 100'), the first stage doesn't seem to deliver enough air to comfortably supply two divers at inhaling at the same time. All said, while I wouldn't say don't buy it, I like my DiveRites better.:D

There is a subforum here that gets really in depth on the various regulator makes & models. A search should yield more info & opinions than you really wanted, or just ask there. Here is the link: http://www.scubaboard.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=16

I have had the GS2000 for a number of dives and a number of years. I on the other hand feel that they are very good regs, they deliver well, are easy to service and bullet-proof.

Once properly adjusted they can and will deliver air at any depth just like any other reg (compared to lot of the more expensive regs). Environmentally sealed units are good for colder water. Balanced piston design. Balanced adjustable second stage. Technically those regs are/were made by Oceanic as an OEM for Genesis. Worth every penny.....although mine have been downgraded to stage bottles, they still get used on a regular basis.....and still prefer them over a number of regs I have tested since (Mares, SP, DR,)

It is entirely possible that my reg could be adjusted to breathe better in the situations I described. I sure wouldn't mind if they were. Maybe I just need to find someone to work on them that has a lot of experience with them, or learn the in & outs of rebuilding & adjusting them myself.
