I'm surprised they are considering this a new discovery just now. Aquarium hobbyist's have been doing this for years. I grew the small acro in the foreground from a single polyp. This pic illustrates about three months of growth.

Ultimately, they are on the right track. We need to plant more smaller frags rather than fewer bigger developed ones. There's no need to hang coral on stands. It's double the work. I've heard reports that Walt Smith's operation in Fiji often suffers from the coral stand being overgrown and a mess to try and relocate the coral as it's a tangled web of coral branches.
