Dear all,

I have a question about the referral procedure. I have to end up the relationship with my LDS. I have been patient to get through without any more conflicts. He just crossed the line. I have completed the class session for the rescue certification. I also completed the CPR and First Aid last year. So, I need to get OW check out sessions done.

What do I need to get for the referral procedure?

Are there any fees involved for the “Referral”?

Do I have to inform which shop I use for the referral?

Thanks in advance,

I did my Rescue cert. open water portion as a referral, only because I had a trip planned to Mexico already,in Colorado in the winter I would of had to travel somewhere anyway with the LDS. I was also fortunate enough to have a great LDS,we also spent about 4 hours of pool time practicing the skills after the accedemic classes and test.

I really liked the fact I ended up having 3 different instructors during my rescue course.1 for class,2 for pool, one on one for ocean and shore skills via referral.I got lots of varied and valuable advice this way.

To your question, not many ops were used to having a rescue referrral,in reality I would think it would be impossible to do the whole course from the start during a vacation. We agreed on a price,I think they charged ~$400 for the complete course,I got the open water portion for ~$200,that included all the boat dives and instructor.
I brought a form from my LDS,much like a BOW referral form,it had sign offs from my accedemic/test portion.I also brought my EFR card (cpr). Doing it this way will end up more expensive just like doing a BOW referral does.

Good luck!,mine was a fantastic experience, just tell your LDS you plan on doing your open water on vaca, get your initialed form in hand and say goodbye if that's what you think is best. You ofcouse could use that referral to go on a local trip with another LDS,again the cost would need to be negotiated.

1.Your dives shop should not charge for the referal form, they've already been paid for their portion of training, that form is your only proof and the end work product. My LDS gave me a ~$100 discount since I wasn't doing the open water portion with them.
2.The form/slip doesn't specify the referal location or shop it can be used anywhere I think within 90 days(not sure about this),where you use it is your bussiness.

Just to add a little to this, you may want to take a medical form, (signed by your Dr.),
I've had several occassions where students I referred couldn't get certified even though they didn't need the Dr's release. I now recommend all my students take one with them.
