Reef Check Southern California Training Coordinator
The Reef Check Foundation seeks a Training Coordinator for our California subtidal monitoring program in southern California.
This position has two primary responsibilities:
Each year, Reef Check trains over one hundred citizen scientists for the California Program (RCCA) who join our existing teams and survey about 50 monitoring sites in southern California. This position involves training the volunteer divers and extensive scientific diving throughout Southern California. In addition, this position will involve helping to develop a marine science curriculum and using it to teach middle and high school age children both in the classroom and on boats. Responsibilities will include regular communication with volunteers, data management, outreach such as presentations, working with staff to identify funding sources and evaluating the education program.
Qualifications:
Significant recent Southern California diving experience, a professional dive certification (at least Dive Master), previous scientific diving experience e.g. AAUS, knowledge of southern California marine life. Minimum Bachelor's degree in marine biology or science education with excellent oral and written communication skills, prior experience teaching science, familiarity with non-profit groups. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can work independently with support from Reef Check staff and in collaboration with partner organizations.
Full-time position (40 hours/week) based at Reef Check HQ in Marina del Rey with health and retirement benefits and will require occasional statewide travel. During survey season, most surveys and training sessions are held on weekends and this position requires attendance of most of them. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
