Take your diving to the next level during this scientific, cross-cultural liveaboard expedition! Dive and snorkel in one of the best preserved kelp forest ecosystems in the California Current, witness the Natividad's fishers' progressive management techniques, and invest in preserving Baja's natural capital.

You can join this trip of a lifetime as a trained Reef Check California (RCCA) Diver or a guest. As an RCCA diver, you will dive your way down the Baja Peninsula to Isla Natividad, conducting scientific monitoring and helping Mexican governmental agencies, fishing cooperatives, international academics and NGOs collect key data on rocky reef sites. Superb diving abounds around Natividad; RCCA divers and guests will have plenty of time to enjoy recreational dives in the amazing kelp forests!

Hello Reef Check

You are right, our Mexican Kelp forests are amazing !!

I was in the San Benitos in October for the last time.

Would you have room for Alicia Hermosillo to be working on Obisthobranchs at Natividad ?? What are the dates ??

Greg Grivetto knows her well !!

Opisthobranch of the Week is Polycera kaiserae

Also she can deal with her own permits as Semarnat and Conanp do not seem to like ecotourism to be mixed with reseach unfortunately.

Happy diving !!

Hi Alicia,

Sure you are welcome to participate in the expedition. Up to today CONANP has been working with us and we hope this collaboration continues.

Please contact me at mluna@reefcheck.org if you have any specific questions on the EcoExpedition.

Thanks for the post and we hope to see you in October!

Thanks,

I will give this information to Alicia,

She is Ali here at Scubaboard but does not visit too often gueri25@hotmail.com

I do hope the San Benitos are granted protection status soonest. There is one very beautiful nudibranch that is endemic to the San Benitos, maybe it is also to be found in Natividad (she has not seen it in Cedros).

Great to hear about Conanp in Natividad, in Guadalupe mixing ecotourism with research is some times a little touchy

I was just looking at the prices, if am not not mistaken the expedition cost for ecoutourists is a little over 450 USD a night or about $6000 pesos a night (for seven nights). Is this also the cost for researchers ?

Are you leaving from Ensenada or San Diego ?

Thanks

The boat is leaving from San Diego and will stop by Ensenada to clear customs. From there we will head down the coast and survey some key sites. The trip will culminate with ~3 days of diving in Natividad's marine reserves.

The cost per RCCA diver is about $375 USD so in pesos about 4,880?

However, a more affordable expedition to include researchers only could be a posibility in 2010.
