Redundant weight belt fastening?

I'm using a traditional weight belt with a nylon strap for now and I don't totally trust the plastic buckle. I was wondering if anyone has modified a similar belt to remain in place if the buckle inadvertently opens/fails? I was thinking of maybe putting holes in both ends of the belt with some kind of eyelits and running a rope/strap between them (ideally with a redundant quick-release device). Has anyone else done something like this?

Put 2 buckles on your weight belt, and that should solve your reliability problem.

Some tech divers do this for metal or plastic buckles.

Just replace the buckle with a metal one...Trident and ScubaPro both make really nice metal buckles...should run you around $10-12.

Never heard of the 2 buckle thing...sounds kinda overkill...

I recommend the double buckle as well, though I use suspenders & a suicide clip on mine.

I'd recommend getting a Stainless Steel buckle....they are available at you LDS I'm sure....or you can order on-line...

I would recommend against the double buckle....seems like more of a hassel in an emergency....and FWIW, I have a plastic buckle that hasn't failed in 4 years, and it's BLUE not BLACK...so I'm totally violating rule 6......

I do plan on moving to Stainless shortly....but I have to find a good reason to go back to my LDS...and one buckle ain't what I'm going there for.....but anyway....

Double buckles are most often used in "nasty conditions diving", such as high current, heavy surge, and/or where a lot of tree branches, rebar, crappy viz etc are just waiting to make mischief.
Standard DIR protocol goes out the window when diving under those conditions; its necessary to modify the gear configuration to maximize safety.
For "normal" diving a double buckle is overkill

If I had seen your post last week I would have said NO. But this weekend my nylon buckle broke:wacko:. I was walking towards the shoreline, so no emergency, but it makes me shiver to think about this happening at the bottom (I was wearing 20 lbs).

So it is 2 stainless steel buckles for me from now on. They're only $3.95 at Leisure Pro.

I use two SST buckles on my weight belt. You can buy the buckles for a few bucks at your LDS or . Reef Scuba. I don't care if it's overkill. It's cheap, easy, and effective.
