Reading the rave reviews for the SOLA 600's red LED option has made me wonder whether the same effect can be obtained by using a red filter of some description with a regular focus/video light. Alex Mustard hinted at this in his review of the 600 on Wetpixel, but didn't think it was as effective as the red LEDs. I have also found push on filters for Inon focus lights and something similar for the focus lights built into their strobes. Does anyone else use add on red filters and if so do you find it makes a difference with the shyer creatures?

I was thinking of adapting something like a Lee/Cokin/Kood filter or acetate sheet into something that could be flipped down over a SOLA 1200 when needed, so if anyone has experience of this can you let me know what kind of filter you use?

I'd going to give this a reply/bump b/c I'm wondering the same thing!

I'm thinking the Sola 1200 is only $100 more than the Sola 600 with 2x the power; but the red LED thing seems to be the bee's knees?

Thoughts/comments/suggestions appreciated!
