Playa del Carmen is across the channel from Cozumel.

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A diver who was swept out to sea Wednesday died from drowning off a Playa del Carmen beach. The unidentified diver died after entering the water on a beach along Calle 4 Norte in the city’s center.

Witnesses attempted to help the diver, however, they were pronounced on scene by medical personnel. Elements of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) arrived at the beach around 6:00 p.m.to confirm the death after receiving the 911 emergency report.

The diver apparently collapsed on the beach after being pulled from the water. Lifeguards had red flags in place, warning swimmers to not enter the sea due to the ongoing heavy wind and rains in the region.
