After 20 or so feet you're going to need a filter or lights. Being that lights have limited distance filter works better for the most part. Beyond 60 ft the filter still works but with lesser results. I've used it at 100 ft and it still was effective. You will need to do some color grading during post but that is usually expected.

Protune has no direct relation to the red filter. It is a mode that records with a higher bitrate and more raw purity. You get a better end result in my opinion but you will need to adjust contrast and brightness with Protune video. GoPro Studios Protune preset does a pretty good job of that.

I also recommend setting the cameras WB to RAW. It gives better color consistency and end results when correcting colors in post. Color correction can be bit of a chore but it gives excellent results if your willing to do it. Or you can just record with Protune off and Auto WB but the video will have a different overall look but may still be to your liking.

I use a red filter often. The start of this dive is a depth of 130, with filter, GP -3 shooting in automatic setting..I do ZERO post production adjustments.. just use Movie Maker to patch it together..
