I'm including an underwater photography dive as an elective for my Advanced certification training in Cozumel in April. Camera rental is $55.

Instead of throwing this money away, is there an inexpensive quality U/W camera I should consider purchasing prior to my trip?

Reefmaster, Sea&Sea MX5 or 10, Aquashot 3... there are more, I just can't think of them right now. There's also a similar thread on this with some good reviews. Price ranges anywhere from $150-$600 I suppose.

a used MX-10 from someone who was upgrading rather than renting. I am very pleased with it and only spent $300 for the MX-10, YS-40 Strobe and Macro lens. You might want to see if you can find a deal like that. I know there are some websites for used and new gear sales. I just heard someone say at our dive club meeting that they were getting a new camera and asked what they were going to do with their old one. Ended up being a good deal for both of us!
