My husband is delebrating a big birthday this year and we're thinking of going to a higher end dive resort, so we're hoping for some suggestions. We're thinking about the Presidente on Cozumel, Anse Chastenet on St. Lucia, Club Med on San Salvador and Harbour Village on Bonaire. We don't particularly care about night life or about being very near a city or someplace where there's a lot to do other than at the resort. We haven't dived at any of those locations other than Bonaire. I'd love any input on those or other recommendations on higher end spots. Thanks.

If you decide on Cozumel I've stayed at both the Palace and Aura in the high end category.
Aura was pretty amazing, adults only, private roof top pool, quiet, uncrowded, gorgeous property, pier for the dive boat of you choosing, good food. I WANT to go back.
The Palace makes you feel like a million dollars, the food is good, great spa, and nice rooms. The problem with the Palace is they have no shade, no property, kids, only a handful of umbrellas, and hallway noise that flows right into the rooms.
Can't comment on the Presidente, but take a look at the rooms at Aura, they are amazing. The place is very romantic.

If you want THE BEST, and are okay with diving in BVI, which doesn't compare to Cozumel, stay at Biras Creek, a whole different level of service.

on Cozumel - El Presidente and Cozumel Palace are definitely the upper end of the spectrum. The El Presidente is not an all-inclusive but the Palace is.
The pictures I have seen of Harbour Village on Bonaire look nice but I wouldn't call that "high end". Ditto the other places you mentioned - they look nice but are very different.

More info please - so exactly what are you looking for in this "high end" resort?
Are you looking for plush rooms with glass and chrome, spa, cabana boys, and 5 star food?
Are you looking for romantic?
Are you looking for particular type of diving?
Are you looking for a place where you dive 2 dives in the morning, then lay around pool the rest of day?
Do you have a price range?
What time of year?
Caribbean only or would you consider other parts of the world?

Robin, Good questions all, and thanks for your time. First, we're looking only at the Caribbean or Mexico at this point, and we'd be going at the end of April, beginning of May. When I say higher end, I mean better than average rooms, exceptional food and service, a nice beach. If by romantic, you mean someplace that's not over-run by kids, that would be a yes. A spa would definitely be a plus. We like diving with a dive master - such as at Turneffe Island off Belize and on Little Cayman. Drift diving or not - either is fine. We'd like to have the option of diving in the afternoon as well as 2 dives in the morning, as we've been doing so far on our trips.

A couple other options:

Lodge Kura Hulanda on Curacao - not a great onsite beach though - although there's several within a close drive. Including a couple where you'd likely be the only ones there. It's one of the leading small hotels of the world. Nice rooms too, most are mini-suites and well apportioned. And they're just off Playa Kalki, one of the best divesites on Curacao. Downside (maybe not for you) it's a 45min drive back to civilization.

Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda - stunning beach - onsite diveop (DiveBVI) but I don't think they shoredive there - just snorkeling as it's shallow. Every time we went in on the DiveBVI boat to pick someone up, the turtles went diving for the bottom. Virgin Gorda has some good restaurants, a Friday night BBQ at Leverick Bay that everyone goes to, the Baths for snorkeling and generally good diving. It's pricey though.

The Ritz Carlton on St. Thomas - it's on the East side of St. Thomas so somewhat secluded. St. John is about 1/2 hr. away by ferry for something else to do. You can even daytrip to the BVI's via ferry on certain days..I've never been there - stayed nearby once and dove that area. They have their own onsite diveop - Patagon? It's well away from the hustle/bustle of Charlotte Amalie also.

I've stayed at the Presidente, great hotel with a nice beach and an excellent dive op on site in Scuba Du. We just took a short cab ride to town for dinner at night because of all the wonderful restaurants in San Miguel, but they do have a good place to eat at the hotel too.

Anse Chastenet sure looks like a great place to me but I haven't been there, but one of these days..........

Thanks for the suggestions. I've heard about Virgin Gorda and Little Dix Bay. How does the diving compare to Bonaire and Little Cayman ? (I know - nothing quite compares to Bonaire)

A place I recommend to people looking for some luxury with good diving is Young Island Resort on St. Vincent (actually a private island off St. Vincent.) A bit off the beaten path and good diving especially if you're into smaller critters - lots of frogfish and seahorses to be found, among other things. Not a dive resort per se but there are 2 dive ops that will pick you up at their dock and the diving is pretty convenient.

Well, if nice beach is a requirement, skip Cozumel. The west side of the island, the one with electricity and all the hotels and diving, does not have beaches except for a few where sand has been brought in. El Presidente looks like they might have one of those. Palace does not.

Have you considered Turks & Caicos? Provo area is supposed to have some beautiful beaches, along with some nice resorts and great diving.

Most of the better diving off Virgin Gorda is a short boat ride elsewhere. In a week of 4 dives/day we only dove one site directly off VG, the Aquarium and it was a shallow 2nd dive (lots of fish obviously)

Diving isn't quite up to Bonaire standards, when we were there in late April the vis wasn't much above 70' or so and there were often particulates in the water. It's partly because the islands are between the Caribbean and the Atlantic so in some areas the currents and tidal exchange affect it.

It's also however a great spot for larger stuff. Almost every dive we saw small sharks, turtles, cuda and some larger ocean-going fish. At one dive, we dove a above water pinnacle, one side was the Atlantic and the other was the Caribbean. Since it was sheltered there were thousands of tiny baitfish. I watched as several cuda and a couple of smook? hit them repeatedly - silver scales everywhere...

There's two prime areas that we dove from VG, the Dog Islands slightly NW (VG is a long island) and all the channel islands to the SW - Cooper, Norman, Salt, Ginger etc.

IMO the Dogs had less fishlife but larger stuff. Also less bottom cover. The SW islands had a profusion of soft corals, sea fans etc, with lots of smaller fish hiding around it. Also we only saw turtles there afaik. Nowhere were there massive schools of fish but always something interesting to look at.

If you're familiar with the Vista Blue area on Bonaire, it's closest to that but with much more vertical rock formations and hard ledges. The islands themselves are very vertical and drop into the ocean, it continues below water. Some of the better dives - Thumb Rock and another I can't remember - were big rocks thrusting out from the reef. It's pretty impressive. Generally we never exceeded 70-80' all week and were near/on the bottom.

One must dive is the Rhone wreck. I'm not a wreck diver (I'm the guy that always votes reef over wreck on the boat) yet it was the best I've ever done. The front 1/2 is a long swimthrough - it's where they filmed "The Deep" and the back is just full of all kinds of interesting stuff, a huge driveshaft leading to a massive propeller - it must be 15-20' tall, lots of small stuff embedded in the coral, collapsed structure with intact glass portholes etc. They move the boat between dives as the moorings are somewhat far apart. Dayboats from Tortola and even St. Thomas also dive there. It's about the only time all week we shared a mooring.

The DiveBVI folks are a great group. It's one of the few diveops that actually do what they claim. We literally gave them our gear at the beginning of the week and picked it up cleaned and dry the following Sat. Every day everyone's gear was laid out down to the tiniest detail, we were even asked how we wanted things configured. Every night they stored it - I don't know the arrangement at Little Dix, it's not their main location.

If you do stay there, plan on going to the Baths one day to snorkel. It's these gigantic rock formations rising out of shallow water on/off the beach. google it, they're pretty famous.
