I'm very new to diving and I'm looking at purchasing a dive watch in the next couple of weeks before my AOW course (borrowed one for the basics). Can anyone recommned a basic Casio or similar brand that would be suitable? Up to $100 and good as a general watch too. No dive computer advice at this point please.

Casio makes a couple of nice dive watches. Look for the water-tight to 200m mark. Anything less isn't enough if you're looking to use it for an instrument, even for a backup.

I have Timex, rated to 100m. I have use it to 30m+, still working. Price: Around 30 bucks.

I have the casio g shock....the silver one with three little countdown circles. The best thing about it to me....other than it works great.....is it came with a 10 year battery. That is critical to me because i hate buying a watch...have the battery go out in 2 years...because once you open it ...you can forget 10 meters much less 200.

oh....remember to get the rubber watch back...not the cloth one.

Magnetite,
Check out Leisurepro.com and review their watch section, also Divers-supply.com.
You'll find several that fall within your parameters.

if you're willing to spend a little more (around $135-$150) you can get one of seiko's automatic diver's.

you wont even have to change batteries and they're been used by divers for ages.
i've got the "orange monster" and use it a lot as everyday watch.

you can see them at http://www.skywatches.com.sg/
and http://www.pmwf.com/Watches/WATCHSALES/SeikoSalesTable.htm
among other places.

Timex and Casio both make suitable dive watches. The Casio G-shock in one of it's various flavors is popular with commercial divers as they do the job and yet are inexpensive and not a big loss if damaged.

I would also second the thought to consider a Seiko Automatic diver's watch. Alternatively you can get a Citizen Promaster Automatic diver (basically the same thing as the Seiko with a Seiko movement and slightly different and slightly smaller case design for a little less money) I paid $115 for my Citizen 200M Promaster Automatic diver on E-bay and the 100M version can usually be found on E-bay for around $85.

The watch in it's Seiko or Citizen derivative is a good basic watch with a one way rotating bezel. They are available with blue, black or orange faces (the orange face is a knock off of the vintage Doxa watch) and can be had with either rubber or metal bands. They work well for diving but are a lot dressier than the average Casio or Timex at the office.

Aquatech @ Walmart. Not fancy but it does the job. $6

My Freestyle Hammerhead is a nice watch for about $85. Looks good in and out of the water.

Casio G-Shock here. I've had one for years and love it. I've never had a problem with yet.
