I have been using the Canon S90 for a year now, and decided to try to take advantage of its Raw capabilities. But when I went to open my images in Photoshop CS III, they wouldn't open. I thought maybe I needed t update my copy of CS III, but it said I was up-to-date.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Mel

Did you enable the RAW option when you set the camera up, it does not default to RAW or RAW plus jpeg. As delivered I think it only does the jpeg file. You have to go into the menu and select the option for RAW.

The last RAW update for CS3 was Oct 2008 Adobe - Photoshop : For Windows : Camera Raw 4.6 update
If your RAW format is more recent, you may be out of luck and need to upgrade to CS5 or Lightroom.
Alternatively, you should be able to use the software that came with your camera to convert RAW to TIFF and then use PS if you need to.

Download the DNG converter 5.6 from Adobe, which supports your camera. Convert your camera raw into a Adobe DNG file and CS3 Raw can open it.

I find Canons DPP software much easier and more straight forward to use...

I open my RAW files in DPP, then, once I have white balance and any other RAW level changes made, I go up to the top and click "open in photoshop" which opens photoshop and then I have TIFF file ready to go...

It's great to be able to use the free software DPP for RAW conversion, that's one option. But one thing I like about Lightroom -- it does not modify the original RAW file. I much prefer that. Sometimes I make mistakes and want to start over, sometimes I want different effects in different finished pics. More flexibility and safety too.

Anyway, the original question was about opening S90 RAW images in CS III. I think what matters is what version of Adobe Camera RAW software you have, I know it's supported in my CS4.

ACR is a "plug-in" for Photoshop. It's bundled into the latest versions, but you need to update it from time to time, when the camera makers put out a new camera and tweak their RAW file format. Just download the latest greatest ACR that can run on your software and you should be good to go.

Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows

I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. Adobe's DNG Converter software is a free software. If you use DNG Converter to load your pictures from your camera or memory card to your computer then Photoshop CS3 needs no plug-in to work with the .dng's.

Any and every version of Adobe Camera Raw works with .dng files; there is no need to update Camera Raw to work with .dng's. When you double click on the image in Bridge, the Camera Raw window opens, allowing you adjust WB, and many other possible adjustments. When you then click "open image" the adjusted image is opened in CS3.

If you then only use "save as" for saving the image from Photoshop, there is no dng file option available in the "save as" window, so there is no way to change/damage the original .dng file.
