Any information on Rangiora? Is it worth the trip? If so what hotel and dive shops do you suggest?

Rangiroa, I love that place. Its one of the world’s largest coral atolls.

I dove with Six-Passenger Dive Company who were wonderful. Anyone who is apprehensive about getting in and out of a Zodiac, don’t worry. They will "help" you get in the Zodiac. The seas were quite rough going out to the dive site with huge swells. Once in the water the visibility had to be at least 100 ft. We all frolicked with the turtles for a long time and admired the resident black tips. I ran into a huge school of barracudas and took an underwater video.
After finishing the dive, the Zodiac came to pick us up, by literally hauling everyone on board, where we all landed flat on our stomachs, but so relieved to be "back on board"!

This is one place I’d like to revisit for a longer stay.

Rangiroa is a beautiful place with places even for good snorkeling. We did a shark feed, snorkeling, with hundreds of reef sharks.

I reported on Rangiroa in another thread this past week. Spent 2 weeks last August in FP. Dove in Moorea and Rangiroa. Visibility in Rangiroa was the best I have ever experienced. When you look over the side of the dive boat, the water is the most indescribable cobalt blue.

There are less than 1000 inhabitants, and 1 real hotel The Kia Ora. Translation, next to no diving pressure on the reefs. Rangiroa is the second largest atoll in the world, and it is so vast, that even the dive master who has been on the island for five years has barely scratched the surface.

I dove with Top Dive at both islands. Fantastic dive op, really let you do your own thing.

Bottom line - Rangiroa and FP are a destination that everyone should experience.

I support fastcat's comments. I honeymooned at Rangiroa in March 2004 and stayed at Kia Ora in an above water bungalow. Absolutely fabulous but not cheap. I also dove with Top Dive and found them fine. All the dive operators (there are 4 or 5) dive the same boats (open zodiacs) so I'm sure you would find any of them to be acceptable. The diving is mind blowing if the current is right.

If you can afford it, go for it. You won't be disappointed.

was just at the kia ora in December for 4 nights on the heels of a weeks long stay on the Aggressor (which will only be in the Tuamoto's for another 4 months i believe.) A nice quite slice of paradise though one of the most expensive corners of the globe. the diving was fantastic and that is all there is to do there save for relaxing.
