If while diving with an op you lost your wedding ring, and someone from the op searches for it for you for a long time and eventually finds it, and returns it.

What would you do in order to thank them?

In many locations a good tip would be appropriate. Depending on the circumstances, I might also try and do something nice for the person, a nice dinner for the person and his family, that sort of thing.

Why in the heck would I want to return your wedding ring? It is already at the pawn shop.

Give them more of a tip than regular. If they are a good diving operation its their job to help you with a problem that may have happend on your dive no matter what it is. When people use you as a guide on a reef or other dive, you as the guide are the person that will know the area (or should) good enough to go back and search. Sometimes the things customers leave are in the boat, on the bottom of where you anchor all of the time, in transport vehicles and left in hotel rooms.

That person is just being smart, When you want to go on a dive trip I bet you think of them again. Or at least recomend them to a friend.

Still an extra good tip to cover the hours of time spent would be fair, especially if they went back to a dive site or something and had to run a boat or truck.

ok well here is what happened I was an intern at a dive op for a while and was not the dive leader as I'm still working my way up. However, I'm basically the official spotter and point out tons of things to guests that they would normally miss. I like doing this so no biggie, however after searching for this guys ring and finding it and showing him tons of stuff and helping him identify what he saw and delaying the second dive to find his ring. He simply said thanks and I saved his life. That was it... Anyone think it's inappropriate? or am I being way too picky

:no

You cant try to figure out what is appropriate in the eyes of your customer. All you can do is your best as their guide and if they give you a tip, well thats great. If you dont, well you have no idea what the financial status of that person is in any form so you cant even begin to wonder if they should have tipped you or not.

The only thing you need to worry about if you dont get a tip is if you blew it somehow.

It sounds to me like you got some dude who was on a trip with his new wife, or wife to be and he had spent all his money to be there with that ring and go diving.

Sounds to me like you did exactly what you are supposed to do as a guide. Dont worry about it, one day someone will give you a huge tip just for helping them with their fins or something and you wont understand that either.

You will get major repeat business if you keep up your good attitude even if you dont get tips when you think you deserve them.

Where did you find the ring?

I found the ring among rocks close to the shore where there was plenty surge partially buried in sand in between two small rocks. It was dull gold so didnt reflect much... ohhh well.. and he was on vacation with daddy and the family an his wife so I'm sure that wasnt the case.. but ohhh well probly would of just spent whatever the same day buying drinks for my friends

A tip...If you lose something and we go search for it, we charge you.
