We are going to SHB in March and I was wondering if anyone who has been there recently could tell me about their dive experience.

My dive buddy is newly certified and I took a refresher course after about a 7 yr layoff from diving. We are going to take an advanced OP water course prior to leaving for SHB. We do not own our own gear and I was wondering if renting all (and I mean all) our gear from Small Hope Bay would be prudent. In other words, is their rental gear in good shape and safe to use.

Also, in reading some of the posts regarding SHB it seems that they do a lot of deep diving (i.e., beyond 130 feet) and I'd preferr to not go below 100 ft or so and definitely do not want to go below 130 ft. for safety purposes.

Hi there ... I dove at Small Hope Bay Lodge 2 years ago.

I don't remember any of the dives being particularly deep ... I think I did 12 dives there. Not bad diving. "Coral Caverns" was my favorite dive.

I would not be concerned about renting gear there at all. The only they do there at SHBL is dive -- it is a purely a dive resort, and there is not even a small store anywhere near there.

I am sure all of their rental dive gear is decent, and if you guys are brushing up before you go, don't sweat it at all -- the diving there is really easy, and the guides are all very professional ... you are going to have a great time.

The food there, on the other hand, was really bad, and I am not being snobby. It was terrible actually -- like one step above jail food. Sorry to say this!!! -- I hope it has improved since I was there!! ...

It is a very pretty spot though. I liked the full open bar, all day long too. :)

Thanks, Firestone. Sorry to hear about the food but the diving is the main reason we are going and it sounds like they run a pretty good operation. Looking forward to it. Thanks, again.
