I've posted my ear problem the last few months and want to thank all for their feedback, especially DocVingo.

I have had a suspicion all along that part of my problem was caused by incomplete or incorrect equalization on ascent on my last dive back in Bonaire.

The current issue of "Dive Training", page 98, third column says:

re: ascent

"The last thing she should be doing is the Valsalva Maneuver which pressurizes the middle ear. On ascent the middle ear must depressurize ..........One technique that helps depressurize the middle ear is pinching the nose and attempting to inhale against a closed throat...............But remember, this requires momentary breath-holding so it's absolutely essential that she stop her ascent during the technique".

This is all news to me. Any comments/suggestions?

Thanks,

Sy

Hi Sy,

Like gas elsewhere in the body, gas within the middle ear space expands upon ascent and must be allowed to equalize. Incomplete or non-existent clearing upon ascent is known as "reverse ear squeeze," a condition that can be very painful and do significant damage to delicate tissues within the ear. Valsalva and kindred maneuvers increase pressures within the middle ear space, and for obvious reasons this is undesirable in the diver experiencing reverse squeeze.

The technique discussed in Dive Training is a reasonable one, although simply descending to a level where the pain ceases and then swallowing often will clear the ears.
