Dear Dr. Deco:

Seeing as you are employed at NASA, and in light of the recent remote expeditions to Mars to determine if water exists on the red planet. I would like to know if NASA confirms the existence of water on Mars, will they go into the tourist business and run some dive charters to Mars.

Cause if they do, I can be packed and ready to go really fast!

Yours in adventure

If you want an answer from Dr. Deco it's best to post in the ask Dr. Deco forum but since this seems aimed at humor I'll move it to the humer forum.

Hello pt:

MARS Diving

The truth is, there is water on Mars, but it is frozen on the surface (at the north and south pole). Liquid water might exist below the surface. However, that water will be very muddy. If that is all you want, you can get that in Louisiana! :martian:

As far as decompression goes, it works best in null gravity. While no one would go diving in space, NASA astronauts do perform decompression when in the space suits prior to EVA (spacewalks). This is because the pressure in the suit is 4.3 psi and the spacecraft is 14.7 psi. Because of the lack of musculoskeletal stress, the safe decompression steps can be larger.

Thanks Dr. Deco for the update. So what your saying is it's going to be a low vis cold water dive.

I can handle that no problem. When do we go?

On a side note, did you know your picture is in the PADI Dive Master manual, on page 122. Nice photo, and you look very official in that white lab coat I might add.

Hi pt 40:

Mars is not a good place for a scuba diver. INo one knows for sure about diving on Europa - yet. Our very own planet seem to be the best for that. :06:

As I always say, “God was in a god mood the day he made Earth.”
