Hello fellow divers!!! I just bought my G-10 and will be taking it with me to the keys. Going to be diving the Spiegel Grove, Eagle, Duane and the Vandenberg over the course of the trip. As well as reef dives. I have an 8GB card already but want to take some more memory as I will NOT have the ability to download the chips till I get home.
I LOVE to take a lot of video as well as stills.

Question: I am thinking of buying 3 or 4 more 4GB cards. Maybe 1 for each wreck and the 8GB card for reef dives and shore shots. These should be sufficient shouldn't they?

Thanks for the info

Scott

PMan--Why 4GB? Spend a bit more and get 8GB (or 16GB even). You won't just be using them for this dive trip and having the extra memory, especially for video capture, is never a waste. Just noticed Amazon has 8GB Transcend class 6 cards for just under $20. w/ free shipping on $25+ orders. I have several Transcend cards, have never had a problem w/ my G-10. As John B. notes, a lot depends on if you are shooting JPEG or RAW--but why own a G-10 if you aren't shooting RAW? You'll enjoy the camera, just get plenty of card memory. // ww

You can get 32GB SD cards on ebay for $30. They aren't ridiculously fast but good enough for video from the G10. If you want faster speed they cost more but last forever so any investment is a good one.

If your shots are taken with the internal flash you will not need a fast memory chip as the interval
between one shot and the next is dictated by the recharge of the flash
so just buy the biggest chip your camera accept with less cost per Gb ratio

I think the OP should not discount the importance of the speed of the flash card. I'd recommend getting a good quality Class 6 SDHC card. 8GB and 16GB SDHC cards from reputable manufacturers are quite affordable now. The Transcend card that Warmwater_Wank endorsed is a great recommendation.
I agree that cycling of the internal flash can take longer than the write time to card. However, the OP will be taking photos while wreck diving. Seems to me that he'll be taking a fair number of wide angle shots which will require him to turn off the internal flash. Also, write times for video clips would be enhanced.

There may be an advantage to a multitude of smaller cards. If you flood your camera (God forbid) or lose a chip or damage one, your photos/videos on the other cards are still safe. Smaller memory cards can sometimes yield slightly faster search rates when viewing them in the camera to delete unwanted ones. In a perfect world with no problems one large card would be the most convenient way to go, but sometimes you just have to worry a little and take precautions. Have a great trip.

Thanks for the replies. I am going with 3 more 8 GB cards with fastter speeds due to using a newly purchased single arm strobe.

I do plan on shooting RAW+JPEG

Ain't this place grand? :D

I would forget about the jpeg part of that... they just use up space... and then make your jpegs from Canon's software...

Looks like 8 gig, high speed cards are going for around 16...plus shipping ... or around 20 with shipping (amazon). I've used and am using just about all the card makers...have not had an issue.

Check out Newegg....

Newegg.com - Digital Cameras,Digital Camera Accessories,Flash Memory,8GB,Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC)

Amazon, and if you happen to belong to Sam's club.. the Toshiba cards they sell for around the same price are very nice...

If you do a lot of video.. then an larger card is nice... have have equal numbers of 16 and 8 gig.
