Hi All,

I have a question for transpac divers. Do any of you use anything other than the transweight system for ditchable weights. I am considering a weight belt and am wondering if anyone does this.

Thanks

I've tried a few different things and I think it comes down to how much weight you need. So, how much weight do you need?

You're right. It depends on how much weight. Especially if you're diving a dry suit.

One thing I definitely recommend, whether you're diving wet or dry, if you use a weight belt, go to Walmart and pick yourself up a pair of the wide suspenders used for holding up tool belts.

I was coming out of the quarry and headed up the rather steep hill to where all of my clothes and food and stuff was, when the weight belt began slipping down. I had my hands full, for some reason... In one hand, I had my fins. In the other... I don't remember... All I remember is the weight belt began sliding off of my azz, and as it did, the buckle slipped down a little and began digging into a rather sensitive region of my anatomy. My only thought, as I waddled along was, Dear God, kill me NOW, PLEASE!!!!

I can only tell you what I like to do with 20 lbs. First of all, I hate weight belts. I'm always forgetting it, misplacing it, dropping it, or having it slip off my hips.

So to put 20 lbs on my Transpac, I use a pair of the XS Scuba weight pockets and a pair of the Dive Rite 16 lb weight pockets (the smaller of the ditchable ones). It all fits nicely on the Transpac's waist strap and also the strap is a knife on one side and a DiveRite waist pocket on the other side.

I carry the weights in a small bag with a shoulder strap, and load them into the Transpac not until I'm assembling the BC to the tank.

The best solution? Sell the TransPac, buy yourself a Backplate. You already have the wing. You are diving 24 lbs all the time. Backplate + STA (Single Tank Adapter) is around 12lb. Slap on a 6 or 8 pound V-weight, and all you need is 4-6 lb weight belt which you can use for trimming

What does this get you? A nice, comfortable, streamlined balanced system :)

And when you go to the carribean..you take off the V-weight and you are good to go!

A rig like this as I said is very balanced. What this means? You can kick it up without having to ditch weights. Or you can ditch the 4-6 weight belt, which will make it even easier, and at the same time avoid sending you up to the surface like a rocket. I can see you are wearing a dry-suit, so once you get to the surface, buoyancy will not be a problem.

Remember, shooting to the surface (i.e. dumping weights) is the absolute last option. Try to solve all your problems underwater.

Safe Diving!

When I bought the transpac I was actually planning on BP/W. However, I got the Transpac/Rec Wing/Weight Pouches/Single Tank Bands/ Dive Alert/ and EMT Shears used for less than the cost of the wing alone. I thought I would dive the Transpac for a while as it seems to work really well for the type of diving I am doing at this point. I can always switch after I have a little more experience under my belt and I am sure I can get the cost of my investment back out of the transpac alone.

The reason for the question is that I wanted to explore some different options with the equipment I have now.
