Low and behold, I got something in the mail today from Undercurrent Magazine trying to get me to subsribe, offering their "great low rates".

So I have seen this magazine in the past, but have never paid much attention to it. Is it worth subscribing to?

As for their great price, they want $30 or $40 bucks/year for only about 7 or 9 issues. (this off their "regular" price of $78/year [sarcasim implied]). Now regularly I shy away from any magazine that wants $30 bucks or more a year, but I've heard the magazine was good before so I'm thinking about it.... (I'm getting tired of Rodales same old thing in their magazines...

So is it worth it? (the price).

I'm thinking about sending it back to them and asking them to send me a sample issue.

Undercurrent is expensive because they don't carry advertising.

It isn't a magazine (no pictures), but a newsletter with unvarnished information about dive destinations and operators. You will also get the annual "Chapbook" with unedited trip reports and comments by divers. IMHO, the Chapbook alone is worth the subscription price. I've been a subscriber for years and just renewed for two more. The information contained in the newsletter and Chapbook has been invaluable in deciding where to go and who to book with over the years, thereby saving me lots of aggravation.

You can go to their website and look around in the public areas. In addition to the newsletter, you can subsribe to the website.

I've subscribed for many years, Every time it is time to renew I wonder if it's worth it. A lot of what is in the chapbook can be obtained places like ScubaBoard (they're basically selling what their customers give them for free with this.) Their own reviews in the newsletters seem more thorough and non-biased than you can find almost anyplace else, but there's only so many places they can cover. But so far I've always decided it's worth renewing. (Dive stuff in the mail makes me happy. :)
