Hello, I am new to diving (take OW August 25th and 26th). My first "real" dive will be in St Thomas USVI. I own my own mask, fins, snorkel, boots and gloves but I am holding off on the rest of the gear for now. I have a lot of expenses coming up in the next 6 months. So, I plan on renting gear down there. My question is this, does anyone rent dive computers or is everything just standard analog gauges. It is my understanding that computers give you more dive time. Since the the guy I am diving with has a computer, I want be able to use one too. I am really sorry if this is a stupid question but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. Please don't attack me if this is a stupid question.

You may be abe to rent from a local dive shop before your trip. I do this with mine in Md.

The place I dove In St. Thomas appeared to just have gauges. However I will say I did not ask since I had the rental computer.

Most of the dives on St. Thomas are guided tours, and the planning is pretty much done for you. So a computer won't give you more time in this case, since the DM is leading you around.

Howard,

We aren't diving with a guided tour. We rented a catamaran and crew and they will take us to dive locations but they are not a dive tour. We are doing the local dive lecture to make sure we know what to watch out for and places to go and not to go but we are not in an actual guided tour.

Well - I would recommend contacting a few shops, and seeing if you can rent computers. Otherwise; it's never too soon to buy your own dive computer. It is true that computers are more liberal than the dive tables, and you certainly don't want to be diving on what your buddy's computer says.

I have an oceanic Veo180 which I use as a backup computer. It was cheap, does nitrox, and works really well. I'm sure you'd get years of enjoyment from it or something similar.

I would recommend that you consider a nitrox computer - even though you're not yet nitrox certified. That way if and when you do the nitrox course, you'll already be equipped.
