Currently in the middle of learning my EANx PADI course. I got the pack with the manual and the second book which is the Oxygen Exposure Table instructions.

My question is two fold, first is, do I have to study/learn the second booklet? I plan on reading it but need to know if I should prepare for it?

From my understanding, the course involved 2 practical applications: Using the oxygen analysers and the steps to fill a tank and checking it etc.

That's what it says in the book, but it doesn't say if there is a test and I wasn't told if there was meant to one or not, though I imagine there would be?

So basically my questions are:

Is there a test, or just the practicals?
Do I need to know the Oxygen Exposure Table for the test, if there is one?

You should know how to use the tables and do the associated calcs. The test for the course will require you to do so (yes there is a test).

Everything that is in the package is there for a reason.

You can't have too much information.

Some will argue about it but knowing how to use the tables and do the calcs is a useful skill regardless of the type of diving you eventually wind up doing.

To touch on Gcarters response alot of people will argue that you have computers that do everything for you but here is a real possibility. You pack your gear for a dive and your computer is all ready to go and you tested it out. Once you get on that live aboard trip your computer conks out. By some miracle of miracles the crew has a spare reg set but its analog. Your dive has just been saved but now you need to know how to use those tables.

This is also one of the reasons I am opposed to the agencies getting away from using tables with the citing of "Computers are now replacing consoles"

I agree that it is a necessity to learn and know which is what I am doing, I was just wondering if they would appear in the testing for the Enriched Air Divers Course.

There is a Nitrox test, it covers all the MOD calculations and some other stuff. Most of it is about the use of O2 for diving.
And if you're in QLD, you have to complete the two open water dives.

You have to know how to read the table.

I agree with everything said above, but show me a recreational diver who runs out of oxygen clock and I'll send you a warm beer.

The chart does not need to be memorized. The RDP should be carried with you and youll have to be able to do examples of different mixes, bottom time, surface intervals and subsequent dives tracking residual nitrogen as well as 02. As Superlyte stated its nearly impossible to get near 100% of your 02 loading but tracking it is still important and required.

I agree with you in reality, but we have divers in the Flower Gardens who run out of O2 clock on their computers all the time on multi-day multi-dive deep trips. I know it's a computer issue, but folks actually have to plan around their computers O2 clock.

well i dive with the Suunto viper (that has a manufactures defect) that even at o2 pp at 1.5. it gives you full o2 toxicity in about 35 min of diving at a depth of 34m. so need my address for that warm beer :-)
