I picked up a used Aqualung Calypso reg in great condition with the intention of using it for Deco gases. Then it occurred to me that maybe I can't. Is it possible to clean this reg to be used with pure O2? Or any basic reg for example. Couldn't find anyting on their site saying so or not.

thanks in advance for help,
Jeff

One of the items you need to watch out for are "abrupt turns" of the gas flow inside the 1st stage; some regs made specifically for straight O2 typically are of the "straight through" design so there's less heat buildup from corners inside the reg.
I don't know just how critical that is but its something to keep in mind.

Bob, that is one reason why I really like the Mares MR12 first stage. It is simple to oxygen clean, and the adiabatic compression effects are not so much of an issue.

How are things going?

Hey, No hijacking here! :)

Just want to know if an Aqualung Calypso can be cleaned for 100% O2

Yes, it can. Seek out the guidance of a dive shop that caters to technical diving. You will need to have the first stage thoroughly cleaned using detergents and an ultrasonic cleaning machine. Then, the soft parts will need to be replaced with materials that are designed for oxygen usage. In the case of the O-rings, most shops will use either Viton or EPDM versions.

Once you have this done, you shouldn't use the reg for any service other than on cylinders containing hyperfiltered gas mixes. Standard grade air fills regularly contain small amounts of hydrocarbons, which must be kept out of your clean first stage.

The second stage isn't really critical, as the main problem with high oxygen levels is the heating effect of rapid compression within the first stage. This rapid heating can, and usually will, ignite materials that have a low flash point. Standard silicone lubricant is one of the major culprits in this case.

Also, ALWAYS open the valve very slowly while pushing down on the purge button. This will decrease the heat/compression factor.
