I just took delivery of the new S80 with the Canon housing last week. I have started to play with the camera a little bit and so far have been very impressed. I still know very little about the camera though and I am new to UWP. I am going to be taking it out diving for the first time this weekend and I was hoping someone could give me some guidance about basic setting?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

Joe,

You are in the same place that I am in, only ahead of me. Here are
some comments that I have cut/pasted from this board, so I can't take credit for them!:

1) Av mode was the best to use since depth-of-field was the most important aspect. I "let" the camera decide on shutter speed (btw, I would change ISO depending on depth/light).

2. I did NOT use manual focus -- even on land I find it hard to do trying to use the LCD to get the focus right. With a mask (even though I have lenses for my aged eyes), through the water, through the case, there was just no way I was going to be able to get the focus better than the camera could. Also, with the Canon case (don't know about the Ikelite), you have to hold one button and manipulate one of two others in order to manually focus. Just wasn't going to happen!

3. For the most part I used the "underwater" WB setting. Every once in a while (at a couple of the wrecks) I used the manual WB (using the sand for WB) and I saw very little difference. In post processing, using Elements 3, I can't see any difference in the final image (btw, I get my best results by using the RGB levels correction and correcting for black -- often someone's wetsuit.

I will also PM you a doc that I have assembled from many different sources on general UW photography tips

Dave

Joe,

Instead of a PM, I have it attached

I am going out next week with my S80.

I've had my S80 for a few days now and had a chance to play with it in the pool.

Setting the white balance is very important to take descent shots.

I am also planning to purchase the magic filter (yes, i know it is very expensive)
but i think it will enhance my future UW photos.

OMG!

My canon housing does not have the ability to change the white balance underwater.

While the Ikelite can. Oh man...

Of course it can...
Scroll about midway down this page, this dpreview review of the S80 shows how one can access the white balance option.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons80/page3.asp

Seriously ocr it's not difficult or complicated.
Press the menu button, scroll down, they're like 6 different white balance options including manual white balance directly accesible from there.

dpreview.com:
Canon's ubiquitous FUNC menu offers fast and easy access to a single page menu covering all the most commonly accessed shooting controls - save for those that now have their own buttons; white balance, picture effects, bracketing, flash level output, metering pattern and image size/quality. Note that this display is normally overlaid onto the live preview

If that doesn't work, i.e. reading the review to figure out the white balance option.
You should turn to the tried and true manual.

So after reading your post I was quite concerned.
What no way of adjusting white balance in the Canon housing for the S80???

Hmmm that would be a serious shortfall and quite a knock on the Canon housing.

So I decided to do a bit of research, went to the extent of downloading the basic and advanced user manual of the Canon S80 from the Canon Australia site.
http://www.canon.com.au/products/cameras/digital_compact_cameras/powershot_s80_support.aspx

Page 70-71 of the advanced user manual clearly shows how one can manually set the white balance.
And under the special scenes selection mode, one can also select the uw white balance preset...
